I love my tattoos...and I want to share them.
This is why I post them to websites like rankmytattoo.com and ratemyink.com

I thought long and hard about my idea..its not something you see on lots of other people. I hate it when people say things like...oh I love that, I wanted a tattoo but didnt know what...I want to get that. Then they ask me whose my artist. I want to send business to my artist cause he rocks...But I dont want people walking around with my tattoo on them...I know my artist would change it, so it wouldnt be exactly the same. But still this is my idea.

Is that wrong? What should I say to someone who says they want my tattoo? - when I see comments like this "I absolutely LOVE this!!!! I want to add to the butterfly already on my lower back, and this would be a great idea. GORGEOUS!!!" on my ratemyink.com page...it makes me cringe...I mean, I want to thank them for the compliment...but tell them to come up with their own idea...is this wrong?

i understand. its a personal thing that means something to you. its not like its a jacket that you can just throw away. its like a fingerprint.
i understand that you are proud of it and want to show it off, but hun, in all honesty, if you post a picture of it on the web, what do you expect to happen? Espcially coz its unique.
Im afraid you cant have it both ways!!

This is exactly the reason why I don't want a tattoo..because somewhere there will always be someone who will want or will already have the same design.
If you put pictures of your tattoo up on the internet, it makes it easy for others to print off the picture and take it along to a tattooist. Why don't you just take down your pictures from the internet and share them by showing them when you go out?(assuming they're not in an awkward place..)
If you don't want to take down the pictures, I suggest editing them and putting a see-through logo of your name across the picture, that way the image won't be as clear and easy to copy. Some tattoo websites do this on their images so that they can sell it on to people rather than let them print it out.

I have a strong dislike for people who copy tattoos. Sure there is flash and some ideas can't be changed up too much, but all in all, if you can't think of something even slightly unique or original, don't get a tattoo.

I look at sites like bmezine and ratemyink for little bits of inspiration and to see how other people do things because I love how unique people can be. But never ever would I take someones work or even change it to try to make it mine...because no matter what, it won't be mine. Its flattering, but not.

P.S Just checked out your tat. While I'm rarely a huge butterfly fan, that work is WONDERFUL. Well done and excellent placement <3

I think it is very normal to feel that way. My little brother turned 18 last may and went and got a tattoo it was a logo Hunter S. Thompson used when he ran for sheriff (author of Fear and Loathing) and it said gonzo in the middle of the design. Well 3 weeks later he was hit by a car and killed. So in honor of someone i loved dearly, I went and got the same tattoo (my 1st and only), only i replaced the word Gonzo with his initials and had it drawn up nicely and put it in the same spot. Well i put a picture on a webpage of mine so family could see it. Soon enough some of his friends start asking me if they can get it. I was like you're kidding me right, think of your own way to memorialize him than what I did, i think i have a little more right to it than they do. I saw one of his friends had gotten it anyway, but i was vendicated because it looks like crap, wasn;t designed well and it was way oversized. It looks rediculous the letters aren't even evenly spaced. Luckily I am a very meticulous person and mine didn't come out like that.

Moral of the story you put artwork on your body because it means something to YOU and mine to ME, then other people want it cuz its "cute." It makes a lot of people mad, but there isn't much you can do about it, except know that you are just that cool that people are copying off of you. Luckily you never have to meet them or their friends so it won't be like you and you friend are hanging out with the same tats hahaha. Also maybe keep the pictures of the tattooes you care most about and don't post those. You know, the designs that are extremely special and have meaning to you.

I normally hate butterfly tattoos but your's was done very well. Your artist did a very good job. And yes, I do get irritated when people "steal" my tattoo ideas. I put forth a lot of thought when picking my design and a lot of the time I end up drawing my own, tweaking it until I get it perfect. So to have someone look at my design and get either the same thing or even something very close, it's very irritating. Especially when all of my tattoos mean something to me. How can that design that I drew for myself mean something even close to what it means to me, you know? Annoying...

what is your tattoo? is it truly unique? i always refer people to my artist because he won't do the same tattoo twice. he does specialize in certain styles but all of the tattoos he does are distinctly different. i have often thought about my tattoos being copied. mainly my takeout box because i have NEVER seen anybody with a takeout box tattooed on them. not that it hasn't happened but i'm pretty sure that i'm the first. so the thought that someone else may copy it kindof annoys me but i know that their tattoo won't look as good as mine will so whatever.
you could always tell your artist that you really would prefer if he not do your tattoo on other people (since it was an original piece) and that he not even tattoo something somewhat the same. he may or may not.

Hey Deda....I'm with you on this one....I like my tattoo because it was custom ink....done by the artist for me....I know that it won't be reproduced by him for anyone else (partially because Somebody...my daughter...had to talk him into doing it .....) He doesn't like to tattoo dragons.... Just not his thing. However I do realize that because I have my tattoo on places like ratemyink others may very well copy it and take it to their artists.....and I am bothered by this (a little) .....But I also realize that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. People can tell you all day long "I love your tattoo"....but when someone likes it enough to get an inferior copy of it put on themselves....well you KNOW YOUR TATT ROCKS THEN. I hope this helped....

PS YOUR TATTOO DOES ROCK.....but after much consideration I have decided NOT to have it inked on me (Yet)

That what happens when you are creative and you share your ideas. The only way to keep them to yourself it not share them. Take it as a compliment that people like your ideas. It is annoying when people steal your creativity but it is what less creative people do. You do have a right to politely tell others to create their own tattoos, because everyone should want to be unique.

Ok so if its YOUR original idea and you came up with it...copyright it.. its a piece of art that is only yours and no reputable artist would copy it on someone else...yeah it costs money but it is your work.. and just because you post it online doesnt mean its open to stealing

basically if youre putting them on the internet youre asking them to just go out an get the same thing. chances are you'll never see them anyway so who cares? and besides, surely someone somewhere had the same tattoo before you did. its not that big of a deal
