Softwoods are woods from conifer trees.
They include:
cedar
cypress
fir
hemlock
pine
redwood
spruce
yew*
*even though yew is a very dense, hard wood it is still classified as a softwood, since this is a definition based on its molecular structure and it's still a coniferous wood.

The softwood most commonly used in the UK is from the tree Pinus Sylvestus. Other names include Red Deal, Yellow Deal, and Swedish Pine. However these are not he names of trees but the commercial name of soft timbers. Note that 'fir' is not a specific tree but generic descriptions of timbers from conifer trees.
Softwoods in furniture/construction industry come from trees of names Cedar, Western Red, Douglas Fir, Hemlock, Parana Pine, Pitch Pine, Quebec Yellow Pine, Western White Pine, Sitka and Spruce.
