He will say various things that he knows will make me mad and he says them in a joking manner.
Never things about other people, always things about me - whatever it is about me that might annoy him.
When I tell him to stop it, he just laughingly says all he wanted to do was push my buttons.
I think it's pretty sad that he does it at all.
He's 37 for crying out loud.
Any ideas?
Just trying to understand the motive behind things like that...
Is he just trying to pick a fight?

He does it because he loves you and likes to get your attention. I do that to my girlfriend so she will get angry at me and start hitting me and then I say "awwww i was just kidding" She doesn't believe me but it's true. Girls are cute when you push their buttons. That's why we do it.

He's pushing the boundaries, trying to see how much he can get away with. If you let him tease you and say mean things, it must mean that you love him, right?
He may also truly have the type of sense of humor to think it's funny to put down his girlfriend.
Give him a good honest talk, and let him know that he's not funny, he's being hurtful. If he just thought it was funny, he should be a bit more careful. And if he keeps on doing it, you have a clear sign of his lack of respect for you, and you know the route the relationship will inevitably take.

Oh my word, are you dating the same person I am? Mine is 37 too and does the exact same thing. I don't know why. It's always cracks about me. It's like he wants to start something. He says he's kidding, but sometimes it's the same thing (joke) and I think it's something in his mind about me. I'm thinking about just confronting him on it the next time he does it. Ask him directly if he is trying to fight or is there something behind the comment? I know from a few past comments, he holds his past upfront in stead of putting it behind him and will think I am doing the same thing one of his ex's did to him, which isn't fair to me. I just do not like how they try to make it like it's a joke.

He does it because he can! Set boundaries of what you will put up with in a relationship and stick to it. Unless you want to be used, abused and a doormat. Your choice! He's 37, going on 14. Get a man, not a boy, and live happily with someone who cares about you, not about himself.
Don't try to understand him, figure out why you put up with it.

I think he might be intimidated by you and the only way he gets his gratification is by insulting you. probably one way to remedy this is to ignore his remarks. If this doesn't help try to have a serious talk with him. If he really loves you he will stop

Ew, it really is so gross. do not pay interest to that guy. Why do not you depart him? do not provide him the V-Jay Jay and there is in simple terms no longer some thing for him to be keen on. Ya comprehend? reliable success female!

He's a control freak. By "pushing your buttons", he's anticipating a specific response. By acting all nutty about it, you've given him control of your response. When ~you~ control your response, it'll either push him to goad you harder, or he'll realize it's not going to work and stop.

Yes he is. Otherwise he would not do that. Maybe you need a break from each other. Who knows, maybe someone nice is out there looking for you.

Sounds more like he's trying to get you to lighten up and at least somewhat accept his sense of humor.
