Why not compromise and name your son Tomas Maximus or Maximus Tomas? Unless your wife is unsure about Tomas or at least kind of likes Maximus you are probably fighting a losing battle. To change your wife's mind will take a lot of work -- you need hard core reasons why you prefer Maximus, "I don't know, I just like it," probably won't sway her opinion. Perhaps you prefer it because you know someone with that name, historical reasons, or simply for it's strength? When you present her with your reasons make sure it's not argumentative and give her time to mull it over, I doubt she'll want to make a snap decision. If she's not willing to budge work out a compromise or work on a different name all together.

Good Luck and Congratulations!

Well...I agree with you. Maximus is a better name than Tomas. Here are some suggestions:

Maximus Thomas (Last Name)
Thomas Maximus (Last Name)
Maximus (Last Name) Thomas
Thomas (Last name) Maximus

Or you can convince her that Maximus is more of a strong name than Thomas. ( no offense to any Thomas' reading this) Maximus is a rare Latin name which will make your son unique

Pros for Maximus:

1. GREAT name for a head of a worldwide corporation business (in general, great name for a head of a big company, or business)

2. RARE Latin name. BIG PLUS with University Admissions Staff

3. RARE Latin name. Makes your child unique.

4. Alot of nicknames, other than just calling your son Maximus;
a. Max
b. Maxi

CONS for Tomas:

1. Common American Name

2. In a classroom, a teacher can get mixed up with faces if there is more than one Tomas; this gives the teacher stress and would degrade the teacher's view on both Tomases.

3. This name was a common choice for families...back in the 1700's when America was still fighting for their freedom with the British.

No offense to any Tomases out there...

Tomas is a really cute name but Maximus is really interesting too. Why don't you make one of them his middle name? Maybe Tomas Maximus? Or Maximus Tomas? Good luck with the naming! :)

I don't care what a name means. That means nothing to me. If you have to defend a horrible name (and Maximus is horrible), then that is not fair to a child. Tomas is a much better name. Maximus... maximum... horrible

Don't... maximus is a silly name, think of your child when he is in School. Call him Matteo or something. Tomas is good. Besides, she's going through the pain...I think all women should name the child. :) not helping am i.
