No they should not be illegal. As an owner of 2 currently I totally disagree with the whole BSL (Breed Specific Legistlation) that is sweeping the U.S. If rasied right in a loving family people dont understand what loving and loyal pets than can be. The media only portrays the bad things they have done. They are NOT killing machines on 4 legs. Its the people that use them as ego boosters which make them that way. What is so fun about watching one dog maul and basicly rip apart another dog? Nothing. In no way shape or form. Dont people believe in normal legit jobs now adays? They get payed by seeing whos dog can take whos dogs life first. Thats not a game or a sport. Its just plain SICK. Any dog can be trained to attack on command. But because of the irresponsible people out there, responsible owners and true addvocates of the breed striving to keep them from going "extinct" across the U.S. are just not winning. If a Golden Retriever or a Chihuahua attacks a mail man you dont hear about it on the news....but let a Pitbull attack defending its territory or family and theyre a bad breed. They dont get a slap on the hand. They get death by lethal injection. Its just not right. But I will continue to own the breed just as I have for the past 4 years. Taking in ones that nobody wants. Ones that are starved half to death. Beaten half to death. And finding them 4 ever homes where they will be loved and not forced to do something they dont want to do.

BSL is total BS. I'm sorry it's come to your town...
Pitbulls aren't a breed. It's a generic term used to describe breeds including American Pitbull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, etc etc etc. Many times legislators use this term so loosely they discrminate against ANY dog that MIGHT have similar features.
They're not the dog for everyone. Pitbull breeds need proper care and training by educated and responsible owners. I say outlaw stupid people... that would solve MOSt of the problem.

I think that is a dangerous law. The lawmakers think they are solving a problem, but the end up accusing other breeds of being a "pit bull". I am not even sure those so called lawmakers know what breed they are talking about. All attacks BY ANY DOG are usually male dogs who were not neutered. Instead of outlawing certain breeds, maybe they should offer free spayed/neutering. The OWNERS are the problem, not the lovely dogs. The same law had many dogs (some who were not pit bulls) put down in Canada.

No, but I do think that some of the owners should be!!!!!!!!! There are too many sick individuals out there that intentionally train these poor dogs to be aggressive. They do cruel and inhumane things to them so they become vicious. Then they are used for underground dog fighting til death or drug dealers use them for protection. Pit Bulls are only dangerous in the hands of ignorant idiots as mentioned above. I'm sorry for what you have to deal with now, but maybe if you get enough positive letters you can start a petition in your town to reverse that law!

Good Luck to you and your dog!
Christine

I personally believe that dog discrimination is as unacceptable as it is for people. Pitbulls are a wonderful breed (of our own creation!), sadly, the majority get a bad name from a few isolated incidents - where humans are usually at fault.

An outright ban is not the answer. Perhaps licensing would be a better alternative, to help educate and weed out those who get a Pitbull for the wrong reasons or simply don't know how to manage such a powerful breed properly. In that case, all dog owners should require a license. It would certainly save many from sad endings at rescue shelters.

Labs are the #1 dog that bites. German sheppards are #2.

No, I don't think one certain breed of dog should be illegal.
But, I think that owners need to use common sense when dealing with their pet. A female runner was attacked on the street that I live on by 2 Rottweilers, she has had to have extensive surgery and therapy. They wanted to kill her. While these 2 dogs were put to sleep, they still have more pets, including the mother of the 2 offending dogs. I feel that these people should never be allowed to have pets. Previous incidents let them know that these dogs were dangerous. The dogs had just killed a neighbors dog and cornered another neighbor outside of his garage.

A dog is what you make it. I think everyone should be required to be licensed to own a pet. Which can only be acquired after one month of training. Especially for Animals with reputations. Some large dogs if not fed will go find food. even if it is a neighbors pet or child. They are not aware of the law. Some dogs will be mean if they are not given plenty of love.

I had two neighbors that had two put their pitbulls asleep. One pitbull was owned 12 years and as the owner was walking the pitbull, it saw a puppy being walked near him and attacked the puppy and killed it instantly!

The other pitbull was owned 9 years nothing wrong with the dog, as the same for the other pitbull and was accidently out loose and attacked a lady.

Yes they are the kind of dogs that have no reason to turn on you, they don't think they just go on instint and they have KILLED humans!

No, I think the "IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS" should be the ones OUTLAWED!!!!!

I have a Beagle, but every Sunday morning, I run into "Hoss", a HUGE Pitt Bull. He is VERY sweet, well trained and a giant teddy bear!

As a matter of fact, my dog tries to attack him and he runs from her! LOL

I also think Pit Bulls are very attractive dogs! Unfortunately, they've gotten a "bad name" b/c of these idiots who raise and train them to fight and kill.

Dogs, of all breeds, can be very loving and loyal. It's all in how you treat them!

I'm a BIG supporter of the Humane Society and HATE abuse of animals, especially dogs!

GOOD LUCK in solving your problem. I would move away from the town before giving up my dog, which shouldn't HAVE to happen, either!

Sorry to be so long winded - but your question put me up on my soapbox! I'll get off now! LOL

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!

I think the devil has got ahold of some people and has made them mean spirited and cruel. They have turned the Pit Bull's temperament vicious by whatever means to make them figthers or who knows what else, supposedly for the dogs to compete and make money. Or they have trained them to be "watch" dogs and then they get out and attack other dogs, kids or people and maim or even kill them. I've been to the local feed store where these jerks come in and buy these huge chains along with their dog supplies, which I assume they are using to secure their dogs, no doubt out doors, or to keep them under control when they take them out or whatever else. So, actual events or a bad reputation has led to the ban of Pit Bulls in some communities.
