Everyone has to believe in something... even if it's just in themselfs or science...
Not going to argue who is right. I respect all opinions. :)

Actually, no we aren't just stardust. That was a clever quote by Carl Sagan ("star stuff" is what he actually said), but it's no more true today than it was 20 years ago or 2000 years ago when many were saying the same thing. There has always been information, reason, and ethics or "oughtness" ... and none of these can be explained by star stuff.
Also, whether it "probably happened by chance" is not determined by any scientific explanation, by rather by your philosophical presuppositions. If you start by assuming there is no God, then that's a logical conclusion; you can feel free to mindlessly revel in the rantings of neo-atheists like Brian Flemming. But if you don't start with such a presupposition, then you have to do the hard work and actually think it through.

Actually, the evidence suggests that observable living phenomena has been intelligently designed. The "chance" theory, postulated by Darwinists has been espoused so long that people accept it without questioning the statistical unlikeliness that it could have ever happened.
On the basis of the growing evidence that living biological structures were intelligently designed, we can infer reasonably, that there is some purpose behind the creation of living things. What follows is not necessarily that creatures were designed for some wonderful benevolent purpose. It could be just as likely, on the basis of that limited observation, that living creatures were created for some malevolent purpose. Nevertheless, the fact that we do exist, and that it is very likely that we were designed, there is good probability that it was for "some" purpose.

1) It makes people feel comfortable to think there's a meaning. After all many people out there are mown down just because of some bad people's self-interest and survivors could not continue without a belief in God or some philosophy
2) Some people seek God and find Him (he probably only reveals himself, ie 99% of the time, when people seek). If there is a creator than it stands to reason he made the universe for a reason.

How can anyone say that the univer just happened by chance. Universes don't just suddenly spring into existance. If you saw an apple on the table you wouldn't assume that the most likely explanation is that it just popped into existance, you would assume that someone put it there. It is much more likely that something created the universe than that it just popped out of nothing.

Thought it was a reason, not cause...
Anyhoo - If everything just happens by chance, then why are you asking questions?
Asking a question in order to obtain an answer means that you, (part of a universe in which things only happen by chance), are consciously aware of the concept of "causality", in which due to the nature of the action (question) requires both reason and thought - therefore; is my reason for existing in this moment, to answer your question, or is it a pure act of chance, in which there is no meaning to my answer - if there is no reason for our being then everything is meaningless.
What if the purpose of life is to live, then isn't that enough???

I cant vouch for stardust...
However, I agree with you. It is human nature to beleive everything exists for some cause or another. After all, everything in our existence seems to have a cause or reason to exist. Although, I still havent heard an explanation as to why we need farts, acne or tofu...

It's simply an issue of "projection" and perception. Their philosophical approach is that because they feel they can't understand the way the universe works, or they perceive it's "perfect" (albeit that such thinking is incorrect perception) it HAS to be here for a purpose. Anything random or chaotic isn't a pleasant thought in such thinking, and is generally attributed to an outside force as well.

I don't know whether we exist for a "cause" but maybe we exist for a reason. That reason is to perpetuate the survival of our species. It has nothing to do with religion, spirituality or anything so complicated as that. Any one who watches David Attenborough's programmes on TV knows the way of it - you are born, you grow bigger, you learn to survive, you procreate, you grow older, you die. Even educated fleas do it.
