Field Marshal is a ceremonial rank conferred to distinguished past Generals/Chiefs of the Army Staff. Names of Field Marshals SHFJ Manekshaw and KM Cariappa are noteworthy in this regard. Field Marshals are not Incharge of Operations but as distinguished past Chiefs of Army, may be consulted in operational matters.

most "field marshall's" are british commanders. they can be either air force or army commanders.
