On grounds that it satisfies the need for the males to be placed in a position of power. You can thank the Romans for that, long story short the nail placed in the coffin for woman was when Christianity's Bible got put together, the gospels had been "chosen" to suit the needs of the politicians in power at the Council of Laodicea (search it). Check out the gnostic gospels in wikipedia.com or someplace. Many of them tell a different story of Mary Magdalene. Imagine what the major effect would have if the closest disciple of Jesus was a woman instead of a man. Anyway, most if not all ancient religions, and most ancient civilizations prior to Christianity center the female as the all powerful life giver. So... God can very well be a woman.

On the grounds that males have wanted to rule society.
Well, specifically, the Jewish culture, from which the religion stems. Some cultures have been more enlightened and invoke goddesses, as well.
The Jews have pretty much always been a male-dominated society. As such, you're going to see male dominance in the mythology. The downfall of man is tied to Eve. Only males can be priests. Women should not speak in church. All of those come from the attitude that only men should rule.
Also, the concept of a sexless god was foreign to the Jews when they invented God. So, they had to pick a gender.

really, honestly there is no ground. The first group of rabbis who put together the old testmant ..were obviously all men. Then in those times men had 3 roles to aquire. They took ownership of a wife through sleeping with her, they had slaves and children was the third thing they had.
God is nor male or female.

God has traditionally been considered male because the cultures that promoted belief in God were patriarchal, and viewed males as authorities over and above females. It wouldn't have made sense to them to worship someone of a sex they viewed as inferior. That's also why priests have historically almost never been female, especially in Indo-European cultures.
Incidentally, while Christianity still generally considers God male, it is interesting to note that modern Judaism and Islam consider God to be sexless, or gender-neutral.

On the same stupid ground the rest of the bible is built on. The stories which supposedly explain creation and the human condition are so simple that I can not see any truth to them. They may have worked on our ancestors but I don't think anyone who actually logically thinks through some of the stories with today's intelligence, can truly believe them. Eg Noah and the Arc... seriously...! Sorry, but that's my opinion.

This is a very deep question, worthy of a most sincere answer, which would probably be too long to post here...lol.
However, I will say this...that it has much to do with the male-female (or yin-yang) principle in the Universal Order of things.
Unfortunately, humanity, in our ignorance, has corrupted the expression and understanding of this Universal phenomena.
Requires deeper study than just speculation.

OK, just where is this stupid ground? And therefore who are they that stand on it?
Of course, God is a male, unless you don't think you are part of mankind.

Not all religions believe that God is male. Personally I believe that because God is the creator of everything, God is BOTH male and female.

The Bible
Jesus is the Creator:
"...and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him..."
Colossians 1:13-16
Jesus took on our sinful flesh:
Romans 8:3 - ...God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh...
Everyone knows Jesus was male, not female. Its a historic fact.
Not to mention that Jesus told us to refer to God as our Father.

its just a stereotype since he had jesus as a son with a women. maybe he isnt male maybe he isnt female. maybe hes from a different planet and thats why in the bible it says he will come down one day. he could be an alien leaving proof behide what he wants us to believe. maybe there is no god. whatever the opinion is it has to be respected. you cant force a belief on anybody unless that person is open to it or scared of you.
