My 5 yr. old (indentical twin) son has been complaing of leg pains lately. He went to the doctor and had a blood test done. At this time he was just completing a script for ammoxicillan for strep throat. The blood test came back abnormal and the doctor told us that it could possibly be Lupus (talk about sending us into a panic!). He had another test done because they thought it was abnormal due to the antibiotics. The blood test now came back abnormal again. His white blood cell count is low (according to the doctor) 4.4. I guess it's suppose to be 5.5 on average. Now we have to take him to see a hemotologist. The doctor now informed us that it could possibly be leukemia. I really don't think this doctor should be telling us that he could have these things unless she knows for sure. Should we be really worried about this or could it still be nothing?

First of all, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. It must be awful for you. Secondly, the doctor shouldn't put these kinds of ideas into your head without knowing for sure what the problem is. There are ways of referring patients to certain specialists without invoking fear and panic. Just hang in there and see what the hematologist has to say. I think that's the best route to go since he has blood abnormalities. He/She should be able to help you, and it truly could be a number of things given the vague results you have so far. Good luck and best wishes.

Well if they are NOT SURE, definately no need to panic about it-could-be diagnosis. Never trust a guess. My friend's son would wake up in the middle of the night screaming because his legs were hurting him. They took him to the doctor and it turned out to just be growing pains. I'm not saying this is what your son has, but I wouldn't get scared over what they 'guess' it is. But obviously it has to be something, I suggest finding out for sure.

You need to get this child to a good hospital and get tests ran. You have to be stressed to the max at this point and the poor child. Doctors can only guess what could be going on. If you can get a referral and get to someplace reputable, you might be able to find out what is truly going on. Prayers to you and your family.
