I would suggest by the time they are eighteen months, around the time the bottle should no longer be in use.....Dr.'s will tell you twelve months, but that is sometimes easier said than done.

With my first daughter, I had discussed the issue my doctor since my daughter was 3 1/2 and didn't want to give it up, her answer " have you ever seen a 10 year old with a pacifier ? NO, then she'll stop using it when she's ready". We ended up letting her have it for a while longer and then told her there was an exchange program at Toys R Us (thank god the cashier went with it), she got to pick up a new toy and we left the pacifier at Toys R Us.
For my second daughter, she had about 10 pacifiers on the go until she was about 2 1/2. When they would get a crack or hole, we would have her throw it out (we also threw out a few when she wasn't looking). She threw out the last one within a few months and that was it. She would sometimes ask for it at bedtime and I would say that we would pick one up tomorrow and she was fine with that (we never did obviously).
I guess it's really up to you, there are so many different theories like how it can affect their teeth and that if you take it away it has to be either before 2 or after 3 since it's a time when they are really attached to things but I'm with the follow your child's needs theory, play it by ear and start suggesting that it's time to get rid of it, see what happens, you might be surprised.

Two of my four kids had pacifiers. I always took the pacifier by the time they were two. It was tough for them for a couple of days, but eventually they got over it. My other two sucked their thumbs and I am still have a problem with the one sucking hers at ten years old. I recommend a binky over a thumb any day. Just make sure that when you take the binky away, that you have something else to soothe them whether it be a blanket, stuffed animal, or whatever. Good luck!

They won't talk good until they turn 5 or later. Both of my children never had pacifiers because my doctor said it was for parents to shut their baby up. I know a boy who has the pacifier and he's three and doesn't talk. My son just turned two and talks in 6 to 8 sentences. Get it away, there is no point. It also causes crooked teeth. My son got rid of the bottle at 14 months a battle and my daughter got rid of it at 10 months herself. There is no point of the binky.

i have three children and from experience my advice would be to get the child a new comforter ie a blanket or soft toy having a pacifier over many years can result in problems with teeth from my experience i slowly took the pacifier away during day and when prompted i used distraction tactics such as comforter ie teddy or toy and only giving pacifier at nap time and bedtime

Its not good for their teeth to have them sucking on a pacifier that long. I think at least by age 2 it should be gone, but the sooner the better. The longer they have it, the longer they stay attached to it.
