Talking about Brahmins and Vedas... Go study the Vedas first.
Vedas divided mankind into four sections, based on their merits.
1> Brahmins: The Intellgectuals. they wer good at grasping and analyizing social behaviours. They wer trained with all the rites and rituals alongwith the essence of these rituals, the practical effects of these on people and the environment around, the mantras and off course their messages to the mankind, etc. Does a Brahmin today have enough knowledge that he can lead mankind to the right path?
2> Kshatriyas: The Strong and active. they were trained with warfare activities. They were resposible for protectio nof the clan. Does a kshatriya today, actually feels the urge to protect mankind?
3> Vaishyas: The businessmen. These people were responsible for uplifting the economy of the clan. There strategies were not concealed to merely uplift their families economical status, but actually create an efficient distribution of the work in accordance to the developmental requirements of the caln. Does a vaishya today actually think about the financial status of the territory he resides in, or merely about uplifitng his own finacial status?
4> Kshudras: People not falling under any of the above mentioned category. These were large in numbers and were the labours who needed a leader for supervision. Does a kshudra today realize his role in the society, or is he more concentrated about the benefits he can get from the adminsitration?
This division lead to efficient work management in the clan and made sure that everyone could earn his living. Later, it became customary to marry to a person of the same section. The reason was scientific - genetics. This custom was introduced, so that the offspring would eliminate the negative traits, if there were some, for the first threee sections. For the fourth section, it was still R&D. However, classification on basis of merit wasn't eliminated.
Later as the time passed by man started forgetting the basic fundamentals. Untouchability came into picture. The reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Rama gave the message by eating berries offered by a so called untouchable - 'Untouchability is not what Veda's have thaught. All human beings are equal'. We human beings ignored the message. Instead we started ignoring other concepts laid by Vedas.
Later, Lord Vishnu reincarnated as Lord Krishna. In "bhagawad Geeta" He clearly indicated that each section has his own duties and one must pertain to it. We ignored the message again.
Finally, He reincarnated as Lord Buddha. He thaught us the forget the current concepts (at that time), forget all the differences, and live a simple life. We instead created a partition. We labelled followers of Lord Buddha as people if different religion. Lord Buddha, who wouldn't have ever imagined this could happen, laid the foundation of Buddhism. He designed the ethics. We separated those ethics from our materialsitc world as a different religion.
he Gayatri mantra is as follows:
OM BHURBHUVAHA SWAHA TATA SAVITUR VARENYAM BHARGODEVASYA DHIMAHI DHIYO YO NHA PRACHODYAT
Meaning:
Om is a saviour of all and immortal. So this name is everlasting and we must remember it repeatedly. Bhuhu----base of breath i.e., creator (God). Bhuvaha----ends sorrows (God). Swaha----omnipresent (God) .Tata ...he, Savitaha--- creator of whole Universe .Varenyam--- Acceptable .Devha---giver of pleasure. Bhagha---unsophisticated/clean/pure or Supreme. Dhimahi---meditate/concentrate i.e., we do meditation of Almighty God who is base of breath of all, ends sorrows, omnipresent, creator, acceptable , giver of pleasure, unsophisticated/Supreme. Now see second part----
Yaha---who, Dhiyha---mind, Nha--- our, Prachodyat---enlightenment with wisdom i.e., the adorable God may enlighten our mind with wisdom.

Years passed by till the modern age came in. All the essance is forgotten. All the knowledge is gone. We hunt for it once again. We create flying machines once again, we learn astronomy once again, we discover that the earth is round once again, we realize the matter and energy are transformed from one from to other once again, we discover the ninth planet once again (called 'Yam' in our mythology, beyond which is the 'Yamlok'), we rediscover medical science, and plenty more things...
No one give importance to thse things anymore because no one knows anything about the essence of these things. Once a person realizes that learning these things can actually bring in a lot of light into this world and his own life, he would difinitely try to learn these things...

FIRST OF ALL WHO IS A BRAHMIN? AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, SIMPLY BORN TO A IYER OR IYENGAR PARENTS ONE CANNOT BECOME A BRAHMIN. ONE WHO REALISES THE BRAHMAN ONLY CAN BE CALLED BRAHMIN, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE CAST.SANDYA VANDANAM, GAYATHRI JABAM,BRAMHA YANGJAM ETC ARE USEFUL TO REALISE THAT ULTIMATE. ON THE CONTRARY VEDAS ARE THE LIFE STYLE RULES AND HAS TO BE FOLLOWED WITHOUT ANY DOUBT. I AM AN IYER STRIVING TO BECOME A BRAHMIN.
