Is it a lack of empathy, a misunderstanding of what cancer feels like, immaturity, a misplaced attempt to be amusing, lack of experience.....?
A later note: what set me thinking this way was a question about gifts for a person with cancer. The first suggestion was a sex toy, although that wasn't the exact word.

Because they have never experienced what cancer can do to the person who has it, or the family and friends that are affected by it.

Most people are very ignorant when it comes to cancer, they hear that a person is out of treatment for cancer and they think that the person should just get over themselves, they do not realize how cancer can disrupt a persons life.

They don't know the pain that cancer brings, Hopefully they never will.

People who have never had cancer or who are not dealing with cancer daily really do not have a clue. Unless someone has personally experienced this hell there is no way for someone to truly have an understanding. There are many inappropriate responses to questions and there are many inappropriate questions. The best thing to do is ignore rude and offensive posts and just answer questions as honestly as possible.

I do feel that there are a mix of people (just as in life) on these boards . . the majority are good hearted people who want to help but just don't really understand and their advice can be questionable. There are some who are professionals . . who understand the medical side of the issue. There are people here who are solely trying to market and sell their products or a 'cure'. There are people here who are just curious about cancer . . there are people here with political agendas . . and, than there are people who have genuine questions and they are the people I am most interested in answering. The genuine questions and answers are what make this place tick and make it worthwhile.

I'm not sure what you mean "unpleasant" answers. The fact is cancer is a deadly disease with a known statistics and progression. Facts are what they are. Sugar-coating answers does not make an answer "correct". Personally, if I feel the question is serious, I will post a factual answer even if it may seem depressing.

I do agree there are a number of repeat answers and posters that write immature questions/answers that lack any empathy.

I apologize for those people who post such unpleasant answers to any questions people have. Cancer is nothing to joke about or post such insensitive answers.
I sympathize with you. Perhaps a hug will make you feel just a little bit better. And, I shall whisper a little prayer for you.
Hugs

Well unfortunate this website attracts all kinds and ages. One only has to have a computer.
When someone on this website tells someone to do hand stands three time a day to keep from losing their hair while going thur chemo, I think that should give you a hint of the kind of village idiots in here.

i guess it depends on prior experience, good or bad, and just how closed minded a person is. ei: lung cancer, sure you can get it if you smoke, you can also get it from being around smokers, pollution, etc.
skin cancer, not just for sunbathers.
it's a horrible disease and sometimes people are cruel in an attempt to shield themselves from their own failings and personal flaws, just ignore them
just because a person has cancer doesn't mean they have to die, i didn't and i hope i encourage someone to fight and keep striving to live.

Unfortunately modern society has trained people to see cancer as a moral failing. They think you only get cancer from smoking, or tanning, or doing other "risky" activities.

Of course, the fact is, anyone can get cancer, at any time in their lives. So, maybe some people are scared, and try to distance themselves from it.

Ignore the answers you don't like, and just try to find the ones that have helpful information.

In my experience what brings this about is simply a lesser form of intelligence that prompts those who respond in kind to feel as though they are more important than they actually are. Please don't permit their lesser qualities detract from the fact that we are ALL children of God and that some of us need more lve and acceptance than others. I include these clueless types in the "need more love and acceptance" group
