Put him in very cold water...
No seriously. Take the dog's paw and shake it. Then pat him on the head and say "good boy" Do it again, always giving affection as a reward. A slice of bread works wonders also as a reward. Each time the dog shakes you hand give him a small piece of bread. 2 slices (broken up) given little by little usually does the trick. Keep practicing for a few days, then he will be shaking like a pro. This training works great for other tricks too. Sorry about the bad joke at the first of my answer. But I bet I got your attention!!!!

make your dog sit. Have a tastey treat in your hand. Pick up his paw and shake it. Give the treat to him and say shake. Keep saying shake while he is eating it. Do this several times. your dog will get this really quick it took my dog ten minutes. Some people say not to do this trick until dogs are older because everytime you get a treat they strach your hand trying to shake. It wasnt a problem for me.

They normally have to be in a sitting positon. Have their favorite treat ready to give to them. Say "shake_____" (dog's name), or the name first, then shake. Gently place the paw in your hand. Try again. Give the dog a piece of the treat. After a few times the dog will catch on, but you have to play the game with them a few times a day so they don't forget. Always reward them with a treat or play time. (or affection).

I used a clicker. They can be purchased at petco or most pet stores. You want to break the task of * shaking* down into simple steps. You click and treat ( small treats are good) if the dog just lifts its paw. Then after he understands that, you click when it is raised higher. Then click when his paw touches your hand. You can get him to initially raise his paw by showing him something and he will want to * grab it* Make sure you *click* when he is * doing* the behavior ( not after his paw is back on the ground) The clicker training is based on operant conditioning and dogs ( and puppies too) really love to learn that way. They use this conditioning on dolphins also. Good luck!
