I lived in bkk for 3 years and been in Chiang mai for 2. yeah there is way too much traffic in bkk to see a lot so if you go anywhere try to stick to the sky train route so you can maximize your time. Go to the MBK shopping center, it is huge and there are actually many things to do there and is really just quite impressive to see, you could also walk away with a lot of great deals.

Chiang mai, OK there are a lot of things you could do in chiang mai but each one is nearly a whole day, i would definitely recommend going to Doi Suthep and stopping and huay kaew water fall on the way up to the temple you could stop there and have a little picnic on the way, or going to the elephant camp would probably be a great way to spend the day. You could also go rafting after seeing and riding the elephants as it is near. Either way there is always the night bazaar in the evening, which i dont like very much personally but most people get a kick out of it. For dinner i would recommend either Riverside restaurant or Suantree restaurant, Riverside has western food but Suantree does not.

Good luck

Very short trips...go for the must-sees and souvenir spots.

Bangkok - To Visit:
- Wat Phra Kaew
- Grand Palace
- Wat Arun
- Wimanmek Palace
- Jim Thompson's House
(should be more than enough for one day)

Bangkok - To Shop and See
- Suan Lum Night Bazaar
- Joe Louise Traditional Thai Puppet Show @ Suan Lum Night Bazaar
- Siam Paragon

Chiang Mai - To Visit
- Wat Phra That Doi Sutep
- Any temples in the historic area....(I forgot their names but most of them are, like, 700 years old or more)
- Chiang Mai Cultural Hall, near the 3 Kings Monument.

Chiang Mai - To Shop
- Chiang Mai Night Bazaar (night market)

I'll just say in Chiang Mai go see Doi Suthep and the temple that has all the monks you can chat with. Sorry, I forgot the name of that one.
