I'll be graduating in 3 months, so I'm pretty sure they gave me the raise to get me to stick around after I graduate. $20/hour isn't exactly what I want to end up at, but it's not bad for someone who is still in college.

My question is, am I supposed to thank the owner for the raise? If so, what do I say? By thanking him am I indicating that I plan on staying there after graduation, because I'm not sure I want to. I really want to try to get into MIT.

YES! Thank your employer - remember, they like to be acknowledged for good things too. Perhaps with wording such as:

"Thank you for raise. It makes me feel appreciated as an employee and lets me know that the company values my abilities and contributions to our workplace."

This in no way indicates anything other than your graciousness.

I agree with I've Got It. No where in what she suggests does it mention you're future plans whether it be remaining in the company or applying to MIT.

If you aren't gracious and leave them out in the cold, I doubt they remember you the next time they are considering employee pay scales. I would want to stay in their good graces as an employee. You never know when future plans might change.

If the boss is the owner vs. a supevisor, you should say thank you. If it is a corporate environment and boss is managerial or that sort of level, no.

The thank you is good manners. Nothing else. No committment is implied, nor should be expected.

Remember the scene in Oliver Twist where he is like:
"Pardon me but can I have some more??"

That is what you should do. If you get more, they want you to stay. If they don't... then no "thank you" is required and you have a built in excuse to quit later.

I think it wud be nice if u thanked him/her whether u r planning 2 stay or not. coz they he/she doesn't know about ur intentions to leave sooner or later, so 4 them u'll be acting rude for not saying "thank u".
