GED stands for General Educational Development. It is considered to be sort of a high school qualification.
HOwever, this course is intended to offer an opportunity to adults who do not have a high school degree and need to prove themselves that along with the passage of time, and away from schools, they did acquire the knowledge and skills required to earn a high school certificate.
Furthermore, as per the lastest statistics some 15.4 million adults passed GED tests since 1949.

General Education Diploma, as the first person replied. It is the equivalent of a High School diploma. People who, for some reason, were unable to attend high school or failed to graduate, can get the equivalent by taking the GED exam.
