Most departments would not let you transfer to their department and immediately join the SWAT team. My department has a specific number of SWAT positions to fill and once they are filled they don't accept new members. Our positions are on a minimum 1 year rotation and maximum 3 year rotation with an additional 2 years possible when approved by the C.O.P.

You may have to transfer to the new department and then wait for positions to open up.

You need to contact the law enforcement in the area where you want to work, see what they require for different jobs. See if you qualify, see if they have openings for lesser positions maybe to start, most people have to start at less thatn what they want to obtain. It really is a matter of your going after what you want and using all of your training and maybe adding to it as you go forward. The biggest thing would having a position when you move so you can live while you persue your dream whatever that may be. Only they know what they look at as far as experience goes, so talk to someone and maybe get a communication going with someone there through e-mail or something to stay updated. Definetly get a good resume done and in their hands and then find out how long they keep them active. Also, ask about any surrounding areas where you might go and then later transfer, it all takes time and effort if we really want something. Good luck.

there are no front of the line deals, the bottom line is you have to do your time, how would you like to have 10 years in on a force and Johnny GI Sniper shows up from a different force with NO time in on your force and two years in on a different force?
Do you think you would high five him for making the SWAT team over you?
And you have a masters degree, silly question, wouldnt you agree? You don't sound much like a team player my friend.
Knowing what you know now would you pick you?

The main thing you would want to check is see if CA, will recognize NY's P.O.S.T many programs do not transfer you may have to go through the academy again in CA and start out as a beat cop and work your way up.

My supervisor moved from ID where he was a deputy sheriff to UT looking for a job. However UT does not recognize ID's P.O.S.T program so he has to redo the academy here in UT.
