IS this Culture or is this Criminal?
Or is it just plain dumb ignorance?

The child obviously suffers by being abandoned to die of starvation or be killed by wild animals, and the mother suffers as well.
Do you think that this is good, bad, or you can't tell because you don't believe in a good or a bad?

Isn't it true that as we have become more intelligent, we have also recognized the rights of other living things because of our heightened awareness and ability for empathy and compassion?

Our evolution has made us more aware of the truth.

If a tribe sacrificed their children thousands of years ago, even though the children were frightened, horrified, in pain, felt betrayed by their caretakers, But those who participated thought it was "good", does that make it so?
OR does that just make them dumb?

When we become aware, say, of the injustice of female genital mutilation, though it is culture, can it also be recognized as just being wrong, something done by the dumb?

Sho-Nuff: unbelievable. So, though you concede this is done out of superstition and ignorance, and yes, it is done,

you still can not decide whether this is bad or not?
This would seem strange since atheists are so quick to come up with all that's 'bad' about religion and what the religious have done.

It is just plain ignorance (if it is true), and I suspect it is based in some kind of superstition about the baby turning out bad if its teeth don't grow in the way the adults think they should. Eliminating such nonsense is difficult to nearly impossible because it has been a part of the culture for so long and they see no reason to change just because outsiders say they should.

But if there is a God, and he loves all the little children of the world, why does he allow those babies to suffer like that? He could eliminate all such stupidity and barbarism at a single thought, but apparently chooses not to. If that is God's love, I sure don't want to know how the babies would suffer if he hated them!

I don't know where you get "you don't believe in a good or a bad."

The ending of a child's life is wrong. The ending of any existing human life, actually, is wrong. Why? Because we have decided it is wrong. It is bad for the individual and bad for society. It is wrong. It is especially wrong when we are speaking about a child who cannot defend itself.

The tribe that sacrificed children thousands of years ago can't be held up to our particular version of morality. In our 2007 eyes, of course it was wrong, based in ignorance and fear. It isn't fair to judge them as being "evil," though, because they aren't us. In a thousand years, people will undoubtedly look back at our society and be shocked at some of the things that we do. Morality changes, because people change.

This is something our culture considers wrong. It is something their culture considers acceptable.

I would like to help educate them and show them that the superstition that they are enacting is flawed, and thus hope to guide their cultural development into something I personally would consider more moral, because this action violates the instinct for altruism.

Yes, it is done out of ignorance and superstition, and is a perfect example of why ignorance and superstition and faith must be purged from human thought.

They have been doing this for 1000's of years. As this doesn't make it right they don't really know any other way. It's what they have been taught by there parents and so on through the generations. There is no excuse to this in our culture now but you have to understand they don't see any wrong in doing this.

Is consistancy an important component of morality? That's the question. If so, we shouldn't be killling anything. If not, we can eat beef and let the cultures do what they want. I don't think people on Earth are ready for consistancy, so whatever we do in the meantime will have to be imperfect.

It is culture, criminal and just plain dumb. Many cultures have and continue to do dumb things or things against human rights. There is no justification for these things and they will continue until those practicing them realize or learn why their actions are counter productive.

It is a strange ritual. Neither good nor bad. There is probably some reason why they do it. Perhaps a connection with bad luck or somthing. Many things come from drawing false conclusions. That is how most rituals start.

I am an anthropologist who has studied African tribes and cultures. Will you please provide me with the name of this tribe so that I may research this act?

Without knowing the tribe, all I can do is refute your allegations as being false, as I have never heard of this practice. My email address is dickn2000@yahoo.com

to our culture it may be it may be seen as wrong, but to them it is a ritual that they have done for hundred if not thousands of years. and why would you just aim this question at us. just because we don't believe in god doesn't mean that we don't have a sense of right and wrong.

Why are you asking only us? Even though we dont believe in god does not mean we condone (spelling?) killing.

Edit:
But I also do agree with Malcolm. It is just showing how beliefs and religion can be taken to far.
