We haven't lost the hair. It is still present, but in varying degrees of sparseness and fineness. The areas where we retain the most is the part where the most heat is lost, the head, and regions where pheromones are produced and there is adequate body heat to enhance their dispersal, armpits and groin.

Your question presupposes that evolution is correct and therefore makes any answer biased, however, we have hair to protect the underlying skin from the elements, friciton, and to an extent bugs and bites.

I think hair on your head, legs, arms is to help keep you warm, and hair on other parts of the body are to keep bugs off of you. Interesting fact: women started shaving when prostitutes wanted to prove to their clients that they had no body lice.

You lose heat through the top of your head faster than anywhere else on your body, so it seems logical that the hair on our heads is to prevent heat loss. The same goes with under our arms. It is one of the warmest places on our body(along with down under) so it seems like we would naturally keep hair on the places that keep our body temp. level.

Why we have hair on our our head, that I don't' know. Maybe to keep our head warm or protected from the sun.
