I am traveling this summer for the first time after my graduation. I am planning to visit east Asia and Europe. Countries include China, Japan, Korea, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. Is it safe to use my credit cards in these countries? I am just worried about identity theft problem. Thanks alot.

It is safe to use credit cards abroad, but please know this beforehand:

-Before you leave you should notify your credit card company of where you will be travelling so they do not think someone is fradulently using your card and deny you while you're there.

-The banks overseas will charge you a fee for using your card and the price of this fee varies from bank to bank

-Your credit card company will charge you a fee for converting you normal currency into local currency.

I would suggest when traveling to well developed countries such as those that you bring traveler checks instead.

Whatever you plan on doing, I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Great! bmwdriver summed it up best- just wanted to add that you might want to take a bunch of singles (dollars) with you. They come in very handy for tipping. Last time I was "out there" people still appreciated getting them.

Credit cards are also better than travelers checks because by the time you pay the fee for them, it's not much different than the fees you pay for the credit card exchanges- and they give you a better exchange rate as well.

You will usually have to change some money in each country, for pocket money, for little expenses. Try to do it once so you can save on those fees, and if you're with someone else, pool your money and do it together so you only have to pay one fee

And of course, always be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are. People seem to get a false sense of security when they travel and let their guard down.

Have a wonderful time!

Do you remember at Christmas time there were people who had planted skimmers in credit/debit machines? They were getting credit card numbers. I would have never guessed?
Just to be on the safe side, purchase "American Express" travelers checks. If by chance, they get lost or stolen American Express will replace them for you on the spot. Keep a ledger of check numbers and what you have spent and NEVER sign any checks in advance.
Congrats on your graduation and fun on your vacation!

Ive used my cards in every continent other than Africa or Antarctica. Its a great/safe way to travel- much safer than carrying a lot of cash, plus, you tend to get a better exchange rate. ATM cards work well too, better than using a currency exchange. Plus- even if your card was somehow compromised (here or abroad), you are not liable for the fraudulent charges anyway. Just be aware that card companies generally (but not always) tack on a small currency conversion upcharge.

I travel to Europe multiple times a year and always pay everything with my credit card. I never had any problems.
Dunno about Asia though.

You are just as safe abroad as you are here. Identity theft is just something that may or may not happen to you. Do not sweat it!

I think as long as you use them at well established places (Major hotels, restaurant's etc.), you should be fine.
I wouldn't give it to a street vendor who writes your number and exp date on a piece of paper though.
