Say you have to memorize a list of things- make a word out of the first letters- mnemonics-

For example say body systems for anatomy
Dr. Mc Nursie represents the first letter of one of the systems-

D igestive
R espiratory

M uscular
C ardiovascular

N eurological
U rinary
R eproductive
S keletal
I ntegementary (skin)
E xocrine

Certain things like math tables, for multiples of numbers 1 to 12 (or even higher) are necessary to learn at a young age by memorizing. They then remain in memory all over ones life. This is achieved by reading the text as many time as is possible, with concentration, early in the morning soon after you get up, and trying to repeat the tables aloud first and then silently. Then repeat the numbers of the table you have memorized by reciting them to another person and checking your accuracy. You can even write the tables on a piece of paper and ask someone to check. This is how I learnt my tables. (Nowadays, the advent of a calculator or computer has made such rote learning an avoidable, though not desirable, chore.)
A similar thing needs to be done for poems, formulas, or other passages which you wish to commit to memory. All this requires patience and time.
As an earlier answer says, using appropriate mnemonics is also useful to remember a bit more complicated matter, but this too is a very helpful device.
Learning things by rote is a very valuable tool for building brain power and one needs to cultivate this habit.
