Praying for Holy Spirit and keeping in mind what the Apostle Paul said at 2 Tim 3:15 - that ALL scripture is beneficial for teaching, for reproving and for setting things straight. Take every verse you read and keep it in context with the entire Bible.

Study the Bible w/ Jehovah's Witnesses. Despite what many people think, they don't require you to become a Jehovah's Witness. They offer the study at no charge. They tailor it to your personal needs. They show you, from the Bible (whatever Bible you personally prefer to use) what different Scriptures mean. They make sure that all Scriptures are in agreement with the rest of the Bible, and they make it very enjoyable.

The prayer...first we must pray and after a real prayer the Holy Spirit can teach us, can help us understand what we have to understand. It is very important to be sincere. there are people that read the Bible only to find mistakes or other things like that...they are under the influence of the lord of darkness!

If you are new and not a christian yet and just curious thebest thing to do is to get into a bible study class that is strictly non-denominational. I go to one that you can not discuss religion or beliefs at all. You strictly discuss the Bible. You may want to check it out www.bsfinternational.org. Many people that go are not Christian. they just want to learn about this book called the "bible". its more of a book study club.

Otherwise for the Christian- God will open his word up to you. Through conversion- meaning acceptance of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit indwelling.

There is a life study application bible that explains everything and I mean everything. If you want, make sure you get the new king james version to get revelation out of every scripture instead of plain detail. Or what I did was listen to audio tapes while driving and became more and more understanding from the narrator actually projecting it to me.

Reading a LOT about the history of the time, and the cultural environment of the time, and so on.

Reading a LOT about the other religions that were in the area, and so on. learning about the spread of religious and philosophical thought.

CONTEXT is important.

Talk to rabbis about the Old Testament. It's their book, it's their self-story.

Talk to language scholars about what it said in Hebrew, how the translations have changed things from the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek..
