we have a new puppy, who seems to have a cold, runny nose..sneezes, and seems to just want to sleep. I really can't afford to take her to a vet at the moment, and I need help. Is there any kind of home remedy for this? One vet told me that she gave her dog robitussin for a cough. Has anybody heard of this, I really don't want to make things worse. Please help.

depending on where you got your puppy it could be kennel cough. just run a vaporizer and keep her warm try and give her water mayb even open her mouth and use a dropper. my dog had kennel cough really bad once.it is contagious so if you have other dogs keep them away. its not contagious to humans. just baby her and as soon as you get money take him in. call arond some vets are more exspensive then others. good luck do not give people meds unless a vet oks it first especially a pup good luck

You really need to take her to a vet, some have payment plans where you can make a payment for your bill talk to them. Dogs can get almost all the same illnesses that a human does! Allergies, colds, sore throat, flues, pneumonia, everything right down to arthritis!! giving her home meds is really not a good idea you do not know if she could have an allergy to something in the medicine itself which will send her even deeper into distress! Talk to a real vet, explain your financial situation, and get the puppy treated right. It maybe something simple like a cold or could be more serious like a respiratory infection that does need an antibiotic.

You may think about the shelter where you got the puppy. I am sure they have a vet that volunteers his time. They may be able to give you the name of a Vet who might be able to help. I am also sure, if you call chapter of the ASPCA (?) they might also be able to help. I read your other question about the nastiness of some people. That is just an opionion. Dont let it get to you. You did a kind thing by rescuing a dog instead of spending hundreds of dollars on the "perfect" dog. Good for you!

well they do sell pet medicine for a cold. Kinda lik pet tylenol. call 1800-petmeds. They deliver right to your door! haha now I am just quoting the commercial but seriously try it! It should be helpful! Also when I got my dog (from an animal shelter) he had a kennel cough. It's not that serious. usually time and a good diet cures that. But if it doesn't, you should go to a vet. But don't stress too much about it. It's probably something simple. Good Luck!

Well, I wish I could tell you to give it human medicines but I can't. If the puppy is in destress than it needs to be seen by a vet. What seems like a cold to you could be something totally different and the pup will need treatment.
I suggest you find a vet that will work with you about payment. Things like this you should have thought of before you got a puppy.

Sleeping is part of growing,
my dog sneezes to but it is just cleaning his nose.
Keep your puppy warm, have it sit on your lap, the dog will want to sit on your lap later because of this but your warmth will help it a lot. Remember they are small and need to be kept warm at present I sleep with my puppy so he will not get cold. I can't afford heat so I bundle up under blankets and we keep each other warm.

Take your puppy to the vet immediately! I understand that you don't have much money right now, but they've got an awesome thing called Care Credit. Usually the first six months are interest-free! Plus, approval is pretty much immediate.

Did you purchase the puppy from a breeder or pet store? If so, it could be kennel cough. The bottom line is your puppy is very sick. It is not common for puppies to get these symtoms without more danger down the road. Keep me posted.

You can, give her some robitussin, but not very much. You could give her a quarter of a serving, of that stuff.
