just boot from you windows xp disc and it will search for previous windows installs. when it finds the vista it will ask you if you want to overwrite the existing partition or create a new one. you might have to delete the existing first, but then you can re-format any drives on the computer from there and re-install xp.

Whoa there! Get rid of Vista by going to system restore. In Help and Solutions utilize the System Restore to the date when your system was running right and you did not have this deamon Vista. Once the system is reset clean it of all items by using CCleaner . This is free via CNET.Com

Never erase the hard drive! Never upgraded it either until you know what will happen. Vista appears to be a nightmare at this time. Wins 1996, Wins 1998, and XP were in the same situation on intro. Let them work out the bugs before you use it. Good Luck.

Go here and download the iso or floppy version of DBAN. http://dban.sourceforge.net/

From the DBAN Readme.txt file....

2.1 Creating the DBAN boot media on Microsoft Windows
-------------------------------------------------------

Double-click the 'dban-1.0.7_i386.exe' program to install DBAN to a
floppy disk or USB flash device.

You must use an account with full hardware access to create the DBAN boot
media. This means that you must be a member of the administrators group or
have similar privileges on your Microsoft Windows computer. Virus scanners
and domain policies can prevent you from creating the DBAN boot media.

The USB booting capabilities of many computers are incomplete or broken. Most
computers capable of booting from a USB device require that it report a
removable media type, and that it be unpartitioned and smaller than two
gigabytes (so that the BIOS can boot it like a floppy disk).

If the drive letter of your USB device does not appear in WinImage drive list,
then it is an unsupported media type. In particular, most USB+IDE bridge
implementations are unrecognized, which means that a 2.5 inch hard disk in an
external USB enclosure is incompatible.

Make sure you have ALL your files you want saved backed up.

Make and XP boot disk. Put it in and let it boot to the command prompt. At the command prompt type Format C:

And let it go. When done reboot your computer and put the XP disk in and let it go.

Good Luck. Remember that you will need to download all the updates for XP and install the drivers for your hardware.

You can use your Windows disk to format the hard drive. There are also programs such as autoclave and Duke's Nuke and Boot that will wipe the hard drive.

No offense, but if you don't know how to format your drive you probably shouldn't be doing it. You're probably better off paying someone to do this for you.
