I took my 3 year old to a dermatologist. Same thing. He said that it can partly be due to dry air and dry skin, and partly due to shampoo buildup on the scalp. Here's what to do:

1. A shampoo called Nizoral. (picture in sources link) Use it once every 2 weeks until it goes away. This is a mild anti-fungal/dandruff. (be extra careful with eyes - I don't think this is a non-stinging shampoo) The rest of the time, use her regular shampoo. DON'T use head and shoulders - it masks the problem, doesn't get rid of it.

2. Always rinse with clean water.

3. Use a spray on conditioner to keep her hair and scalp mosterized. (once a day is fine)

This works. Simple and takes care of the problem.

Well, the weather for one. If you're in an area that has the 4 seasons, this time of year, the air is extremely dry. My daughter's 5 and I only wash her hair every other day to keep from stipping the oils in her hair and scalp. Use a moisturizing shampoo and if the problem becomes more severe, I know it sounds weird, but vinegar will help add moisture to dry scalp and it's a really cheap fix. Do a vinegar soak every other day and you'll notice a difference. It smells gross, but it does work.

Right after her shower dry her hair with a towel to damp then add a teaspoon of baby oil but rub it into her scalp all over her head. Then after ten minutes of it sitting in brush her hair with a soft comb and try to scratch the flakes out when do this until they are gone. Finally when the day comes where her hair is back to normal start brushing lotion through her hair for about a week. Her hair and scalp will look much better.

Its probably only dandruff do not be worried. All you need to do is get some Head and Shoulders. Head and Shoulders is not the best but it helps. If you give your daughter a bath every day your not helping the matter. In the winter you should only take a bath every other day or every 3 days. Scalps get dry during winter do not be alarmed. If you keep seeing flakes after months go to a peditrician.

Often children have a dry scalp from an over-drying shampoo, or shampooing too often. If you need to bathe her everyday, as children who are three often get dirty enough to need one, try just rinsing the hair every other bath, so not to over-dry. You could also try talking to a dermatologist as this may be a sign of eczema or another skin issue.

When my son was a baby he had the same problem, my doctor recommended using mineral oil. Gently massage into her scalp and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing with gentle shampoo (baby shampoo works best I found). You can purchase the mineral oil at any drug store. I might also ask the doctor about using anti-dandruff shampoo, she may be old enough. Hope that helps!

More than likely your daughter has dandruff or excezma. My son has it, and sometimes i have to use selsom blue on him. Just be careful to not get it in their eyes and keep it out of reach at all times. This is what my pediatricain told me to do. If you are really concerned about the problem you should probably take your daughter to the doctor and see what he says.

I was told baby oil, my son had the same thing. The doctor said to not really be worried about it, the only bad thing is the appearance and that it will go away.
