Here's the quote from "The Humanity and Divinity of Jesus," written in 1950.
"The orthodox attempt to explain the divinity of Jesus in terms of an inherent metaphysical substance within him seems to me quite inadequate. . . . actually harmful and detrimental. To invest this Christ with such supernatural qualities makes the rejoinder: 'Oh, well, he had a better chance for that kind of life than we can possible have.' In other words, one could easily use this as a means to hide behind his failures. So that the orthodox view of the divinity of Christ is in my mind quite readily denied."

The divinity of Jesus (as in more so than you or I) does not substantially matter to the meaningful message that was given.

(the orthodox view of the divinity of Christ is in my mind quite readily denied - ME TOO!)

I've just read MLK's paper and am shocked; he directly claims that Jesus worked for His divinity, rather than was born into it. This is clearly not within the accepted doctrines of the Christian church. It also directly conflicts with (at a minimum) twelve portions of Scripture that I can think of off the top of my head.

On the other hand, the paper was written in Nov. 1949 - Feb. 1950, while MLK was still a student. How many of us have written unsubstantiated things in college papers? (Probably the vast majority of us.) MLK wasn't a great theologian; he was an evangelist and proponent of human rights.

For those who want to read the paper, here it is:

We all know the MLK jr. was a Communist, a liar, a Charismatic leader and a fake Christian; these are all the prime ingredients for the makings of a "devils advocate". Satan used this "human pawn" to deceive the masses to provoke violence and separation of the human race. Unfortunatly, the unsuspecting world has accepted this extremely brilliant ploy of the devil that will only further develop into a diversity of a sub-culture which threatens the moral bonds of society and the structure of humanity.

MLK also had a mistress. In short, he was a good speaker, but a lousy reverend.
