I have got a new dog who has little road sense and I would like to be able to train it to stay in the garden which do to its size doesnt have dog proof fencing

Not with a terrier you can't. You need to either put up a run for him, tie him or go out with him on leash.

Terriers are really a challenge to train to stay in an area like that. My jack russell is almost a yr old and she still trys to attack cars. I got her when she was 8 weeks and after the first day of letting her play in the yard without a fence....she was not afraid to try to take off. You have to be careful with certain breeds especially terriers who are often fearless.

If your dog is straying then two things you need to do, Have the pet spayed or neutered, (desexed) and I highly recommend that you have your pet microchipped. It is not a GPS device but if animal control or a passer by takes them to the vet, we scan all pets and the information is then dispalyed as long as you also register online.
