The three major western religions (Jew, Christian and Muslim) all have the same God in common. The God of Adam and Eve, Abraham, Moses etc.
Surely this is the common ground where understanding and tolerance can grow from, so why are the three so different.

You would think so wouldn't you. Truth is though, religion was created by man as an excuse to act superior towards other "non believers" & lets face it, is the major cause of wars throughout the world.

The Bible isn't a very happy book. It's quite violent in fact.

The separation of these three "gods" was at the time of Abraham...When Sarah gave her slave Hagar to be a concubine of her husband so Hagar could get pregnant. It was common in that time for a woman who was unable to conceive to have her handmaid lay with her husband and give birth on her lap so the child would essentially by the woman's. However, this was in direct disobedience and impatience with what God told Abraham and Sarah- because He told them that they would have a child.... and the did, Isaac, who was born years after. So, after Isaac was born Abraham and Sarah cast Hagar and her son out into the wilderness....Until this point all three religions were the same- after this point they tell different stories.

Interesting start to a deeper idea. Not just the old testament 3 but all religions share a common factor, a higher power. That combined with peoples' desire to communicate with that higher power and one more key element Faith bring together the pillars of a all religion. Past that point it is social standards placed on the practice of communing with God mixed with political agendas, fund raising, and the attempt to hold fellowship with others in a hope to find the cosmic thing that holds us all together.

They each translate it very differently -that is why they are so different! There are other major religions too - Catholicism, Spiritualism - the latter growing in popularity all the time because people are seeking answers that the main religions cannot give.

Jews believe they are chosen ones protecting the Holy land god gave them, Muslims are on a Jihad against unbelievers and invaders, Christians build tech and are taught to spread and convert at all costs

If I believe right, Islam didn't start until 300 BC.

We have a common God, and we share alot of the Old Testament, but the difference is, God promised a Messiah.

Jewish faith and Islam faith rejected Jesus Christ, who is the Messiah.

But, if you open your eyes closely, you will see alot of compassion of the three faiths toward eachother.

God created and loves all men. But, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to open the doors to salvation and inner communion with Him. The faiths that rejected this Gift from God, lack in an inner personal love relationship with God, and hold onto their beliefs that they must "be good" to win their way to heaven.

We -- none of us -- will ever achieve being that good, to get to heaven. It's only through Jesus Christ.

The problem is not the God that they believe in. The problem is that they have chosen to believe in the words a person has written down when they tell them how they should worship that God.

God is he exists has never been the issue in religion it has always been the men who decided how the religion works who have been the problem.

Nope. If you claim to worship the same God, but have three VERY different understandings of that God, and you are a true monotheist, the only possible conclusion that can be reached is "I am right, you are wrong."

You are right in the finding common ground.

You are wrong on the Western aspect. These are Eastern Religions, not Occidental.

I personally believe that way back when the Bible was changed from its original text into each language that is where the seperation began. They all interpreted certain words differently. These differences were key to their belief system. Also the Bible can be taken out of context if not read correctly. You just can't pick out one verse and go with it. You have to study the whole chapter or book to really get the proper perspective.
