My daughter used to scratch her face when she was crying (not purposefully, but 6 months old are not very coordinated!)

The best thing to do is to keep her nails short, and put scratch mitts or socks over hands at night. She will grow out of this!

You can clip her nails. My oldest son's six month picture has a scratch mark from bedtime. I would cut his nails while he slept at night because he wouldn't let me. My 5 month old now has scratched himself several times already. You can also try to redirect the child by giving her a stuffed animal or toy for comfort. Or guide her towards a preferred activity. However, do not give her something that could be perceived as a reward such as Cherios. We gave my son a cuddle puppet and once he was able to understand it was a comfort, we use it all the time when he is upset to help calm him. He is 22 months now. We still try and redirect him when he gets mad. We also taught him sign so he could communicate before he could speak. However, he did not use the sign lanuage until about 1 year, but he understood more when I used it.

I have heard that when a baby that young throws temper tantroms like that, they are only striving for a bit of attention. When she does this, try not to pay too much attention to the tantrom. My son used to bang his head on the floor until he had a bruise on his forehead, I told his pediatrician, and she told me that. Remember that you love your child, and be patient with her. She will eventually realize that throwing a tantrom, and scratching herself out of anger will get her nowhere. Good luck!!

babies get frustraited with not being able to control their little bodies, and often will claw at their faces and heads, simply because they dont know WHAT they want.

Its not anger, and its not against you. Its simply not knowing how to control themselves, and not knowing what they want to feel to comfort themselves. They dont intentionally scratch themselves out of anger or retaliation. They just dont have those thought processes or emotions.

My 6 week old already does this. Ive known 12 month olds who still did it.

There's unfortunately not much to do other than work to discover what she's trying to tell you. My son literally tried to pull his ears off until he was about 9 months and was getting a little ability to communicate.
