I started Tae Kwon Do when I was 44. I'm now 59 & an instructor. You have plenty of time. Pick a style where there is a good school in your area & get going.

It's not how old you are that counts. It's how dedicated you are. It'll take probably 3 years of regular training (2-3 times a week) to earn a black belt, and that just gets you to the point that you know how much you don't know. At your age, if you plan to attend college, that can interrupt your training - either you have to move away from where your instructor's studio is located, or you find you just can't spare the time because of school (and sometimes job) pressures. The Three D's (driving, dating, drinking) also are big distractions for a 17-year-old. Teens pick up on the martial arts moves more quickly than pre-teens, and the moves aren't that hard, so you should do well. It's just a question of how long you'll stick with it.

Absolutely not. If you have the drive and the discipline, you can begin studying the martial arts @ any age. I just went back in October of last year, I enrolled in the same school as my 2 kids. I'm going to be 40 this year.

I've already tested and been promoted to my 2nd belt and will be testing in 2 weeks for another.

I am 38 years old, started my Jiu-Jitsu lesson 3 months ago. I have to fight with three kids as young as 18 years old at the tournament. I got 3rd places, and received a metal. As for you, 17 is not anywhere near too late, or too old. My best advice to you is find the Martial Art you like, and go for it. Don't listen to anybody who said you are too late. OK!

You can never be too old...*

I started when I was 18 or 19 in college, did it very casually, quit for a while, and picked it back up again when I was 24 years old. A lot of people at my American studios didn't start until their kids did. We had a lot of 40-something year old students of all belt levels.

* You're never too old until you're in Korea and at your black belt test there are over 200 people under the age of 16 testing for first Poome (in ONE city and it's NOT Seoul!) and only 14 people total testing for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Dan grade and...at 26 years old, you are at least 5 years older than anyone else there.

Then, you sort of feel old. :)

I've been involved in marshal arts since I was a teenager. Over the years we have seen people ranging from 5 year olds to 65 year olds joining. We even have a couple families that come to practice as a group.

Go ahead and join. You'll get a lot out of it

It's never too early and never too late, My son is taking martial arts classes also, he is 5yrs old, and everytime I drop him to his classes I always see this man who I believe is in his early 30ths, and he is also a begginer, I believe that as long as you know that that is you want to do it will come naturaly....I'm also a begginer at bellydance classes, and its easier for childres to learn how to do the belly roll and the hip drops, but I did not got discourage because of my age, I'm 26!, and now I'm able to do the hip drops and the and the hip slides, and my belly roll is not looking so bad, I'm still practicing, and since thats what I want (to learn the arts of belly dance) I know I can achieve it.

i started when i was 5 and im black belt, but i teach lots of people who start even as 30 year olds at our school. We even have a few 50 year olds. there are adult classes at our school that seperate the kids from adults. 17 is considered adult, so you wont be sparring little kids.

It's never too late to start. I was in my 20s when I took up Tae Kwon Do. As long as you're motivated nothing is ever out of reach.
