Harry i had 2 sony and a panasonic. Panasonic had great colors but not great lense images were little soft. Sony DCR-HC23 i believe will do nicely for u. Mini DV tapes can record up to 1 and a half hour of digital video of highest quality, 1 hour of digital video is 14gb. On the other the mini DVD can record only half of digital video compressed down to 2gb. May be they go to 45 minutes. So it all depends on the onboard proccesing of video. The mini DV tapes can be processed by any pc and burnt into DVD according to your needs. ROXIO media suit software burns on the fly a DVD, simply satrtup the software put aDVD in the tray connect ur camera and out comes a dvd. The Sony ones on the market now have a hard disk and can shoot hours and hours of digital video. There are also cameras that store video in RAM memory only and this camcorders are really small. It all depends on your budget but SONY is great lense quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar .

I've got one of those digital ones that use the really tiny cassettes, a Canon one and it's ok but the picture could be better. I don't know about the dvd ones.

Re the price - I got mine from Currys.com. It had a good discount, then a bag and some blank cassettes thrown in. Then I used one of the voucher sites to get a code and got a further 10% off as well.

I would go with the DV tape. The DVD is fine but they can be expensive. Plus you can always re-record over the tapes once you put them on your hard drive or to DVD
