Yes, and if they treat me like dirt, I'm out of there. You do not need to take their belittling attitude. THere are plenty of doctors who take the time to listen to you and explain procedures, medicationnns, and your symptoms so that you will understand what's going on and let them know what you are experiencing that brought you in to them. YOU are their bread and butter. You are the consumer and they are the provider. Therefore, you can pick and choose who you want to go to and what you will put up with. Don't go to someone who does not treat you with dignity and respect. Go elsewhere.

Oh yeah. I'm so sorry you feel that way. I feel for you.
It's so disheartening to be treated that way, especially when you are sick. We would all be happy to look up to Drs and give them their due; we want them to 'take care' of us.
When they are rude, arrogant, rushed and condescending, it doesn't matter how much education they have. They are idiiots.
We should pity them, because they must be miserable people.
I'm in the medical field and I've seen good Drs and horrible Drs, but I was never so surprised as when I became a long term patient and saw a lot of Drs.
I was treated so bad by some, it was unbelievable to me. They were either dismissive, very rushed, talked about me like I wasn't there- and in a negative way, ridiculed my concerns, etc, etc.
One neurosurgeon in New Orleans wrote in my chart a completely untrue summary of a head to toe physical, he never did on me, so it qualify me for him to do surgery.
. When I got a copy of my records which I guess he thought I'd never see, I was shocked to see how normal everything looked on things that had been abnormal for years!
I eventually got the courage to call and voice my concerns about this to him. Of course I was denied this multiple times, Guess I forgot, a patient can never speak to a Dr on the phone Was I crazy??
I persisted, and he was even ruder when he finally came on the phone. I was calm, and told him my concerns and asked if he made a mistake. He said no, and he wasn't changing it. He suggested I find another Dr. Duh.
I reported two of them, to no avail. The receptionist at the state medical board forgot about the complalints, and then said Oh, uh, yeah I found it. I got a letter saying they did nothing wrong.
I guess there are still some good ones out there...where??
I think they are trying to see way too many patients, and would panic if they had 15 minutes free down time, so they overbook.
Insurance company's have ruined a lot also I think. They are the middleman in the relationship that is supposed to be between the Dr and the patient, and it often doesn't develop nowadays.
Dr's blame them, but Drs are responsible for their own behavior.
I'm hesitant to stay in the medical profession, I've become so cynical
Just wanted to say I know how you feel, and what I've learned and tried to practice is to remember:
-They work for y ou! You be in charge, in a respectful way.
-You probably cannot change them. But you can change drs until you find one that fits.
-Carry yourself with the pride you do everywhere else, and do not start the visit with a subservient aura. Many Drs see themselves as this poweful person (or God) but take notice when someone does not succomb to that attitude. Stand when they come in.
-If they rush, you don't follow that lead. You take your time and set the tone that you will be here, and he/she will, until you are done asking questions.
Good luck and I hope we both find restored faith in Dr's and their staff.
.

Princess-thank you for asking that- there are so many doctors out there that do treat all of us like trash or dirt -even we nurses. They are sometimes very arrogant and self absorbed, especially if they are having home problems, and alot of them do. But we shouldn't have to pay someone to make us feel worse and insult us all at the same time. I wrote a Doctor one time and asked him why he acted the way he did, because he
hurt me deeply. He called me to his office and apologized and said he was just having a real bad day and he was really, really, sorry. He said the patients had treated him like crap all day and he was getting really tired. It has never happened again and he has been my Doctor now for 7-years. Maybe we should all start writng them and it might not make a difference to some, but it did with this doctor and he's our most popular doctor in town. They treat thousands and if one doctor hears us then we've made a difference.

Unfortunately I just recently experianced that over the past week in the ER. I took my daughter in at 12 midnight due to a high fever, not only was the doctor rude but so was the adminstration lady that gave my daughter motrin. The made me seem somewhat inadequate of a parent. However, the sad truth is that there are not enough parents out there that give a crap about there children and they are going to make me feel like I am punished for bringing my daughter in.

My doctors treat me fine but I know what you mean. There are some out there today who should not be doctors. The went to medical school probably just to gain the status and make easy money. They have no bed-side manner and do not like people so they should not be doctors. Shop around if you don't like your doctor. The old saying still holds true, there are many fish in the sea. Keep on fishing and you fill find what you like. Eventually, you will find a doctor you will like. Good luck.

And that I am a paranoid hypocondiact (however it's spelt).
For that reason I HATE going to the doctors - they patronise u & try to make u feel like an idiot for even going there in the first place. Mine usually has the attitude (without saying it) of "theres nothing wrong with you ffs"
I have so many ailments now & things I *should* see a doc about but I just put it off cos its such an unpleasant experience.

My experience has shown me rural Docs seem to have more respect than urban Docs, the reception staff in my docs at the moment are rude and very uninviting, but two of the docs are pretty good.
I think alot of the manner goes with the lack of time per patient, but yes I've had doctors who treat you like dirt and i've changed surgeries many times

I had the same GP from when I was 4. I just assumed everyone got treated like cr*p by their GP, and was treated like they were stupid and shouldn't be wasting their time with such trivial matters such as lumps/pains in ovaries etc.
I've recently changed my GP and can't believe the difference. You do NOT deserve to be treated like that. I've suddenly got a doctor who listens and helps me. CHANGE your doctor today, its more simple than you think.
I work for the NHS and I pay taxes and you deserve a proper service.

I see it happen most in the E.R., I am a phlebotomist and it pisses me off hearing some of the patients stories, i know that it gets busy and they don't want to spend too much time on one patient but damn...its why i rarely go see a doctor and i rely on internet research and books, there really are some good alternatives to all the meds they put people on too,now i know their are ppl who really need the meds they are on but its worth checking into alternatives at least. i had lyme disease from a tick bite and the e.r. doctor told me it was 'dermatitis'...i feel your frustration.

I did and reported him for inconpetence..... He even said that I was an over powering mother when my 3 year old daughter was very poorly, took her to hospital and found out she had meningitis.
Some doctors believe that because they have a title, they are some kind of gods and better than any of us!!
