Leeds is a city I know well and there are good and bad areas. As a rough rule of thumb the north and west of the city is better than the south and east and the further from the city centre you are the nicer it gets. Having said that, the city centre and immediate surroundings have undergone a transformation in recent years and there are now a lot of nice waterside apartments within walking distance of the city centre.

The postal districts are numbered from the centre outwards with 1, 2 and 3 being the city centre, 4 to 11 surrounding the city centre, 12 to 18 being the more on the outskirts and 19 to 29 being the outlying areas.

In general: Leeds 1 to 11 is not so nice although there are nice parts of Leeds 8. Leeds 12 to 15 is mixed, Leeds 16 to 29 are the nicer areas.

Nicer parts with good transport links include Moortown, Roundhay, Gledhow, Shadwell, Alwoodley and Horsforth - all to the north of the city. Outlying areas such as Garforth, Rothwell, Pudsey, Morley etc are generally nice but have some not so pleasant areas. Further afield are more rural areas such as Thorner, Scholes, East Keswick etc; these are all very nice but not brilliant for public transport.

More than anything it depends on your budget. It's possible to buy a house for under £80,000 in some of the less desirable areas such as Beeston, Harehills or Belle Isle. If you go to the more affluent areas such as Bardsey you probably wouldn't get a garage for this amount.
