Hi everyone. This is the most recent of several questions that I have asked about my cat Frodo. I recently took him into my apartment and we've been having some trouble. He's had several UTI infections, but recently the vet diagnosed him with idiopathic cystitis and put him on Elavil. (Elavil is mostly an anti-depressant but also has anti-inflammatory bladder effects in cats.) That works fine, when I am able to give him the pill. :) He seems to be happier. But anyway, recently he's started licking his butt frequently. He's not peeing everywhere or having trouble with urination or anything, but I'm concerned about this frequent licking. Is it worrisome enough to contact my vet?

Thanks, guys. You guys are such a big help. If you have any questions, just feel free to skim over the recent questions I've asked, it's probably covered there.

my cat had a UTI last fall--the vet gave me antibiotics (baytril) which cleared it up, but he was still going to town on his butt. i was nervous about it, so the vet told me that there is a prescription gel or cream that they have to discourage excessive grooming, but you can find something similar at walmart in the pets section. i couldn't tell you what it was called--they were out of it, but i'd try somewhere like petsmart. you might want to just ask your vet about the excessive grooming, or have kitty tested for worms. i'm sure he's ok--doesn't it just break your heart when your cats are sick! good luck!

It sounds like he was an outside cats for a while?
If this is so, he may have a case of worms.

I had a cat was cleaning this area excessively and that turned out to be the problem. Just make sure you get your treatment from the vet and that the grocery store.

I have found the easiest way to get my cats to take any medication is to mix it in with raw chicken liver. Just to break open the pill and sprinkle the medication on the liver. If it is a tablet just crush it up and do the same.

not sure if it could be because of this, but i know a sign an animal has worms is licking their butt alot, cause of the irritation inside. you should probably call the vet to be sure.

that means that it's dry and uncomfortable. Treat him like hes a new baby.. when a baby gets a dry bottom you put diaper rash cream on him. Take some petroleum jelly on a q-tip and rub it on. It should take the discomfort away.

I suggest calling the Vet and asking what the problem could be.
Then with the phone assessment, see if you should take him in.
Good Luck and I hope this has helped.

If you're worried, the best person to talk to is your vet. It may be nothing, but the vet will know better.

definitely wouldn't hurt to call and ask the vet, whenever there's any sort of changes in behavior and grooming, esp if he is on medication.
good luck!!

He might have tapeworms...

Definitely keep a watch out for them because humans can become infected with them too if he does have them.
