The borough of Queens would probably be best for you. Neighborhoods such as Kew Gardens are very diverse, urban, low crime. They are not hard to get used to. If you are looking for an urban area try Astoria, Kew Gardens, Forest Hills. If you are looking for something suburban try Bayside, Douglaston, Or Little Neck. A more practical neighborhood would be Richmond Hill or Jamaica Hills. Some parts of Jamaica are nice as well. Far Rockaway and Howard Beach are along the water. Long Island is a suburb but can be expensive. Some unexpensive places on Long Island are Inwood, Hempstead, Uniondale.

Good Luck!

ok , first and foremost be aware the manhattan tends to be one of the most expensive boroughs in NY , but if you go to uppermanhattan its a little cheaper, check out the INWOOD area, its a very nice neighborhood , I am from the bronx and there are also very nice areas there , like , the north bronx , it is very quiet and nice , also riverdale is very quiet and pleasant neighborhood,
good luck in your move ..
