I'm pretty sure people drink can after can of caffinated soft drinks (not to mention coffee) every day. There's so many (Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew) even super caffinated drinks like those energy drinks. What's this going to do our health in the future since I think this rate of caffiene drinking is unprecendented!

I'm reading a booklet called "Conquering Caffeine Dependence" by Mike Fillon. In it he says caffeine stresses your heart, increased blood pressure, is bad for your bones (increases osteoporosis), can cause breast pain and swelling in women, is acidic and can aggravate ulcers and cause heartburn, weakens bladder muscles and contributes to urinary incontinence. He also says caffeine has its defenders, saying it can improve alertness, reduce asthma attacks, improve athletic performance, help your colon, and reduce kidney stone formation. I think the "big picture" question here is a good one.....how much volume of caffeine do we take in as a society (massive) and how does it affect our collective zeitgeist? Could our general warlike, tempestuous national persona have something to do with caffeine consumption? Why doesn't someone make a movie about a day in the USA when everyone goes cold turkey and no one drinks even one cup of caffeinated anything. I would pay to see that movie!

Look at the Yahoo News today. There is an excellent article and really good links about caffeine and what it can do to you. They list the good and the bad effects of caffeine. It can be fatal if you drink too much. I wouldn't try the excess that the previous answerer talked about. Caffeine is a drug and is a stimulant. It's just unregulated unlike other stimulant drugs (apart from nicotene which is also a stimulant). I just quit drinking coffee and miss it terribly even after 6 weeks!

I have anxiety problems which are worsened by caffeine intake. Also, I get weekends headaches if I don't have tea on the weekends.

I've decided that I don't want to be so dependent on it anymore, so I'm slowly giving it up. Anything that gives you withdrawal from not having it for a few days is not good for your body.

Yes, there are studies that show it can be good for you, but medical studies these days will prove anything to make more money.

Everything is moderation, you know?

It definitely lowers sperm count. But according to Futurama, it can also bend space time if you can successfully drink 100 cups in a week.
