A good pillow should offer adequate neck support, and be preferably of natural material so it can "breathe" and not make you feel hot and uncomfortable. It ought to be firm enough not to collapse out of shape, yet soft enough to be comfortable. Usually, paying a little more gets better results.

I've seen on a health show that if you sleep mostly on your back, you should get a softer pillow so you dont crick your neck, and if you sleep on your side, a medium firm pillow. I've found that foam pillows keep their firmness better.

It depends on your comfort zone. I like my pillow to be soft but still firm enough so the pillow doesnt feel like there is no pillow.

I look for one that is not so thick that it is uncomfortable when lying on my back, but which is thick enough to provide some support when lying on my side. For me, that is a memory foam pillow like those sold at JC Penney. They are a bit expensive though (about $45-50).

Go out and buy as many pillows as you can and test them all out. Take the ones back that you don't like. Make sure to put plastic over them before you sleep on them, so that you don't leave druel spots all over them, and then they won't take them back.

It reallly depends on your personally preference, but I don't care for the feather ones that much; the feather poke out & stick you.
I like a fairly flat one or those firm ones that are made of memory foam.
