I used to work at Lowe's. It was the worst 3 years of my life. They treat their employees like dirt, but they treat their customers like royalty. I would never work at another Lowe's, but I will never shop anywhere else. Lowe's is more geared towards the female shopper than Home Depot. The prices are very competitive, but make sure to take advantage of the 10% deal that both stores offer. If you find a tub at Home Depot that is $20 cheaper at Lowe's (and it is the same brand) then Home Depot will take 10% off of the lowest price. Lowe's will do the same. Make sure before you leave the store you have EVERYTHING you need to do your repairs and upgrading, to avoid numerous trips. If the employee knows what they are doing then they will know exactly what you need. Also, be aware of other specials each store is running, i.e: credit card offers or special %10 coupons. If you have a Lowe's card and Home Depot is running a 6 Months No Pay/ No Interest, then Lowe's will also honor that special, even if Lowe's isn't running it. Home Depot will also do the same. I really hope this helps you!! Good luck and congrats on the new house!

The prices are about the same. I always check both before buying because they carry different styles and colors. My carpeting is from Lowes, kitchen floor and paint from Home Depot, cabinet pulls Lowes.....My counter top will come from Home Depot because Lowes doesn't sell silestone.

You may also want to go somewhere else. Like a Plumbing Supply Store and a specialty Paint Store. Depending on how handy you are... We have found the employees at both less knowledgeable than at the specialty stores and have found that we have saved money overall by not "overbuying" things we didn't need. If you are getting good service at both then go ahead but Service and Knowledge are as important as price... in my opinion

Home Depot is closer to me, but I find more selection on certain things like flooring tile at Lowe's. If it's something like lights or gardening stuff, I'd save time and go to home depot.

LOWES, LOWES, LOWES!!!
Also, get to know overstock.com for big items like bathtubs, etc. I am a maniacal home improver and only shop at Home Depot when all else fails. Another good place for plumbing fixtures, better quality at lower prices, faucetdepot.com.

It really depends...they both have the same stuff..one will be less expensive on some things and the other will be less expensive for other things.....don't limit yourself to one or the other...if they are both close (and they usually are) do some comparison shopping for the exact items you are looking for....Home Depot has some good beginner seminars for doing wrok like bathroom fixtures and painting...

I prefer Lowes because in my experience there is a lot better selection and better prices. I have also found the people there more informative. Check out both stores to see for yourself, one may have a better sale going on for your particular item. If you don't have the time the websites should have prices and inventory listed. You may also be able to print an online coupon.

If you have both stores close, go in and see what your feel for each store is. See if the store looks neat and if things are where they should be. As a woman I also like to see how the staff treats you. I usually go to both to compare then go to Lowes (because I am treated better in that store in my area) and buy whatever it is I need. They will match the competitors price.

Home Depot has better customer service. Their prices are pretty similar since they are such close competitors.
