get slammed unexpectedly by people that either don't understand what you're asking, or jump all over part of your question trying to prove you wrong? (When you're not necessarily trying to be right?) Doesn't anyone out there feel like having a normal discussion?

Once in a while, not terribly often.

I asked a question yesterday regarding mental retardation and its relation to free will, and a couple of people flipped because they didn't see what I was trying to ask, or the point I was trying to make. Somehow, they thought I was 'belittling' the mentally challenged.

Some people get out of bed every day with one goal : to get offended.

It happens to me all the time!

And unfortunately, to some people, trying to prove the other person wrong or being combative *is* "normal" discussion. I think I know what you mean, though. I'd love to have more civil discussion, too.

Also, I've learned that the range of answers I get can be a good thing in itself. I look for learning opportunities.

I completely agree with you and feel the same. I haven't been able to word the questions I have because of this. When I answer, I try to give an honest, helpful answer without pushing my views down people's throats, yet people still take it the wrong way. I think some people get threatened when people don't agree with their views and it causes them to jump all over you as you said, without really weighing out the situation/answer....I think the answer would be to agree that we disagree. (But some people won't do even do that).

NO KIDDING!!!

It's so hard, because people get so defensive! And during in-person conversation it's hard to even get someone to listen to my point of view without interrupting before I'm finished, which is very distracting. I like having discussions about religion - whether it is about mormons, wiccans, atheism, born-again's, pagan... whatever... because I actually try and see where the other person is coming from, and why they choose those beliefs. People get WAY too defensive about this subject! I agree with you!

I'm not sure why but a lot of religious people feel like they are being attacked when you ask a question. It's unfortunate. I've asked a few questions about Jehovahs Witnesses and I can always tell who is one because they always leave a nasty reply.

About half the time. The other 3/4 of the time I get very few or mostly boring responses.

The other 1/4 is when I get actual answers.

Surprisingly, my question about the pagan religions didn't generate one single fundie "burn in hell" response!

Yes. However, typing is a very limited way to communicate & leaves a lot of room for different interpretations of your questions. Keep that in mind.
Nothing is better than face2face communication.
