Sin is a word that has been greatly misunderstood and misinterpreted. Literally translated from the ancient Greek in which the New Testament was written, to sin means to miss the mark, as an archer who misses the target, so to sin means to miss the point of human existence. It means to live unskillfully, blindly, and thus to suffer and cause suffering. Again, the term, stripped of its cultural baggage and misinterpretations, points to the dysfunction inherent in the human condition.

being proud to be an American is okay. When pride becomes a sin is when your let your ego inflate and you think you are better than all others. I am an American and proud of some of America's actions but I don't think I am better than other people from other countries. Because I am not. Just different and unique (and sometimes unusual lol) You sin when you let your humanity overrule your soul, your spiritual side and try to put others down to make yourself higher.
Hope that helps.

We Canadians live next door to you proud Americans.

Now please don't take this as an attack, but to understand how the rest of the world sees you, ask yourself what are you putting your pride in?

Generally, you're like a relative who doesn't do anything but brag about all the stuff your parents did - as though you did it yourself.

This type of pride is a sin. It is not wrong to feel good about something you've done, but to be proud, just because you are an American is basking in someone else's glory.

In almost every list Pride is considered the original and most serious of The Seven Deadly Sins, and indeed the ultimate source from which the others arise. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to give compliments to others though they may be deserving of them, and excessive love of self (especially holding self out of proper position toward God). Dante's definition was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbour." In Jacob Bidermann's medieval miracle play, Cenodoxus, Pride is the deadliest of all the sins and leads directly to the damnation of the famed Doctor of Paris, Cenodoxus. In perhaps the most famous example, the story of Lucifer, Pride was what caused his Fall from Heaven, and his resultant transformation into Satan. Vanity and Narcissism are prime examples of this Sin. In the Divine Comedy, the penitent were forced to walk with their heads bowed while they were whipped in order to induce feelings of humility.

You may proud to be an American, you maybe proud of your children and parents, but do not over proud until you forgot your dignity.

We should also know what it means to be a proud Sudanese, Icelander, Peruvian or what have you. If to be a proud American means that you feel superior to the people of other nations - then that pride is a sin.

I won't make any friends with this one, but here goes. My chain of command, so to speak, goes from me up to Jesus/God.

I believe I must obey the laws of my country only so far as they do not conflict with God's laws. My country cannot tell me to commit adultury, for example. I will not.

I do think that excessive pride in one's country, or nationalism, is in part responsible for the self-delusion that some people are better than others.

For many reasons, I am grateful to have been born in American, but I'm not proud. And I do not share the common American opinion that it is the only place in the world that is free and equal.

Pride becomes a sin when we see our accomplishments as something that we have come up with and not a gift from God. Excessive pride denies that God is the source of all things good.

I don't like the idea of sin, personally, I mean understand the basic meaning and yes things that are natural to us such as pride, lust, and greed can get very out of hand if don't control it. I understand the idea behind the 7 deadly sins and know that they can truly be deadly and/or destructive if not managed properly.

Yes pride is a sin. It is a sin when it puffs up oneself, that we think ourselves superior in some way. Even pride in being American can be a sin, if we think we are superior because of the fact we happen to live in the US of A. Nothing wrong with loving one's country, being grateful to live here, that sort of thing. It's when it goes to your head and you look down your nose at others who don't have what you "have" or aren't what you "think" you are, that it's a sin.
