CFL lamps are the most efficient for a home user. It is even 3 times better than Flourescent lamps using old type chokes. In the future we may see LED lamps. LED torches are a big hit as far as the efficiency is concerned. It can be used in table lamps for its directivity. Buy an LED lamp for toilets and bathrooms. It last longer too.

At present, for home use, fluorescent lamps are the best bet (either CFL or tube type). All have about the same efficiency -- just under four times as efficient as an incandescent light bulb. In the future, LED's may take over, but as for now these are costly, not widely available, and don't throw enough light to be useful. (For commercial use, technologies such as metal halide lamps are slightly more efficient than fluorescent.) There isn't anything to choose among brands -- they all use the same technology, so just shop on cost.

I use CFLs in many places at home, but find they are not always suited for my needs. I use dimmer switches in bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, and living room. CFLs will not work with dimmer switches, so I have to use incandescent lamps.
In terms of energy use, it is clear that CFLs do not use as much energy for a given amount of lighting. During winter months the waste heat from incandescent lights helps keep the house warm, so it isn't entirely wasted energy.
My house uses 64 light bulbs. 33 are incandescent, 22 CFLs, and 9 are 4-foot florescent.
