My brother and I thinking of travelling to China this year. He doesn't know any Mandarin and my Mandarin is quite bad. I am able to write some Chinese characters. Is there any advice for us? I am taken so I am not looking for a holiday romance. My brother hopes to find romance there. How do you reckon he can attract some girls?

why wouldn't you ask this question in the travel section?
or even better, on the Lonely Planet Thorntree (North-East Asia - China Branch)?
anyway, I've travelled all over China from Tibet to Shanghai, from Beijing to Kunming, from Yangshuo to Kaili (which means I have barely even scratched the surface of this magnificent and wonderful country)...
...and I can tell you you'll need some Manderin at least - the more the better unless you want to rely on sign language, shouting (like I've seen tourists do), or staying in tourist centers like Beijing or Shanghai and Xian ...
It also depends where you travel to... if you travel to a university city, you are quite likely to meet students and young people who have some English, but not much English...
Of course, your brother might get lucky, but only in a tourist or backbacker place like Yangshuo ... not in a city in the middle of nowhere...

I travelled there and my main tip is learn as much Mandarin or Cantonese as you can before you go, alot of China is not anglicised in anyway and they are not going to make an effort to speak English so you will have to speak their language if you want any hope of getting around
