I recently moved out of my Mom's house after getting married and my dog isn't doing so great. I brought her to the vet and he said it's "failure to thrive". So I'm moving her in with myself and my husband. She has to stay inside b/c we don't have a fenced in yard. Is there anything that will prevent her from shedding a lot?

There are many things that you can do to reduce the shedding, but there is no way to prevent it. There brushes like the furminator which is a deshedding brush.....I love it!! I also give my dogs 3V caps (from the vet) which are capsules that maintain healthy skin and coat. I also give my dogs a bath once a week and brush them with the furminator before and after. They still shed, but not much. Ask your vet or a groomer, just be sure not to get fooled by all the stuff out there that doesn't work!

If your dog is losing her coat due to "failure to thrive" you should know you have bigger problems than shedding. Didn't your vet explain what that really means? http://malaysia.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070204185318AAIyH6Q
The dog needs attention and companionship. Stat! :^) Actually - I'm a little confused as to whether she was failing while staying with your Mom - or failing since coming to be with you & your new hubby (congrats, btw). Sounds like your dog is/was missing either you or your Mom. Whoever she was more bonded with - she may need to be with that person to survive. In the meantime, show her lots of attention. Part of that can be daily brushing. Not only will that help with the shedding, it'll help the dog feel more secure. Good luck.

Another solution besides shaving and trimming: If you take her to be groomed, the groomer can use a special comb and comb backwards to get out a lot of the loose hair. It is suppsed to work for about two weeks to a month. Also, if you don't want to pay for grooming, the pet stores have real fine tooth combs, the ones where the teeth are close together. You can put her on a leash, take her outside, and comb the hair backwards. I'd do that once a week. That is the solution that I go with for my dogs. Good luck.

Unfortunately like every dog in the world your dog is going to shed year round. You can minimize dog hair in your envirnoment by vacuming and sweeping everyday and also by brushing our dog daily.

not really unless you shave her. The best thing you can do to minimize the shedding is to brush her every day with a flea comb
