Hi, i need help coming up with fun ways to explain compression and compressive force to middle schoolers!! And just engineering in general as well!!

Any ideas?!

How about using an old aluminum bicycle tire pump? If you put your thumb over the output and pump it will even get hot and then get cool when the pressure is released showing how compressed gases act.

Draw them a simple diagram of a piston compressing a gas. Demonstrate air compression with a bicycle pump. The heat of compression can be felt as well. Engineers design equipment using pistons to compress gases and centrifugal or axial flow rotating devices. Jet engines contain an axial flow compressor. A simple fan demonstrates the principle although the discharge pressures obtained over a number of stages in a true compressor are much higher.
