She discusses the pros and cons of almost every breed. The breed which is best for you may not be the breed that is best for someone else. It depends on lifestyle and personality. This site also has some good training advice.
Good luck!

Well that is not a lot of info. All dogs will love their families and be great dogs if socialized and trained. Do you want a big or small dog, long or short haired, active or lazy? How much time do you have or want to devote to caring, not playing, with the dog? These are all things that need to be answered to really beable to help you. I would suggest that you either go to the AKC website or www.nextdaypets.com and go to the dog breed section and look at all the breeds, read about them, and pick the one you think is best for you and your family. I hope this helped. Good Luck.

That's a difficult question to answer to be perfectly honest. It depends upon numerous factors. Here are some things that you should consider.
1. Length of life.
2. Common temperment of dogs of its own breed.
3. Size.
4. Your personality.
5. Classified as potentially "vicious" dog (this is a big problem if you have homeowner's insurance).
6. Vet bills.
7. How the dog's body changes physically with age (for example: German Shepard's have TERRIBLE hip problems).
8. Your availability to the dog. Dogs are a big committment.
9. Your house size.
As always, there are many other unmentioned factors that you should consider. Good luck!

The only way to answer this is for you to examine your individual situation, some things to look at are
Your family composition, how many people and how old are they?
Who is going to care for the dog and clean up after it inside and out?
Your facilities for the dog, ie. do you have a fenced yard? can you at least get a fenced dogrun? do you live somewhere that you are allowed to have pets?
Your finances will they cover the purchase of a dog ? supplies? a good quality dog food? vet care? vaccinations? spay/neuter?
If you have answered these questions in a way that it looks fair to bring a dog into the household composition then you should go to www.akc.org and research the different breeds.

My vote is for a beagle. They are very sweet natured and very tolerant of kids. We had a beagle when I was a kid and you couldn't make her upset. She would put up with anything to have our attention. The beagle I have now has the same temperament. I have owned many breeds of dogs, but none as loveable as beagles. They are also the most adorable puppies and make great inside dogs too. They are not hyper like some breeds and have short coats so no grooming necessary.

Do you have friends or family with dogs? Go for a visit and see what their dogs are like. Or volunteer at a animal shelter see what kind of dog appeals to you. Remember the bigger the dog the more space you will need.

Since you said you want to buy one, I would assume you are looking for a purebred. In that case, I suggest a Boston Terrier. They are very good family dogs. They are spunky, funny, strong, and small in size (and don't shed). I have had 4 of them in my life and they are great dogs. The only bad thing I can say about them is most of them snore due to the short snout, and most of them have really bad gas (most dogs do though). But they are fun dogs and will adapt to anything you want to do, they are happy being with you is all they want in life.

The AKC recognizes over 130 breeds and there are legitimate breeds not recognized by AKC. For every breed there is at least one person that feel they are " the most perfect thing under heaven" and at least one person who wouldn't have one of those things!
Think of what you want in a dog (big Little ect), and what personality will fit you. My sister has strong willed herding breeds, they suit her - I wouldn't care if every herding dog fell off the face of the earth, I like my whippets, my brother hates both & always has had labs.........

you shouldn't take advice like 'this dog is the best kind of dog' from total strangers without getting more information. there are lots of websites to study about dogs; you should get a dog that is right for you. just because someone else loves rottweilers, doesn't mean you will. talk to local animal rescue groups, veterinarians, etc.

German Shepard's are great! I grew up with them and my parents used to breed them. They are smart, loyal and great companions...in fact they love affection and socialization and want to be part of the family!
I added a link to some information about them.
Please make sure you buy from a reputable breeder....not some puppy mill or pet store (where there is lots of line breeding..breeding of family).
You will not be disappointed if you choose a German Shepard!
