You’ll find the roots of American fundamentalism in the rural south. In this same area there have always been farmers who figured out they could make a better return on corn if they turned it into whiskey first. So it should come as no surprise that there also arose widespread problems with alcoholism. Preachers see the affects of good women and children being beaten and abused by drunken husbands, they try to stamp out the problem altogether by preaching against any amount of drinking.
The results of rampant alcoholism are extremely detrimental to families and communities. I can certainly understand why preachers would try to stamp it out when they see the consequences daily, although a complete probation doesn’t work either.
Today, in these same rural areas, whiskey stills are being replaced by meth labs. Of course the consequences will be even more destructive.

Interesting question since the drinking of wine has a large biblical base. Jesus drank wine, the apostles drank wine, it was even his blood which is technically drunk during communion for both Catholics and protestants.
Perhaps the move away from wine for fundies has been an aversion to Catholicism which started with Luther (who was an absolute racist dumbass, but don't get me started) and also blaming wine and alcohol for sins, etc. (even though alcohol was never referred to in the comandments.)
Another thing to remember is that wine today is different than back then. while it was still alcoholic, these days it probably wouldn't even compare to watered wine coolers, that and most Catholic and Episcopalian churches will water their communion wine down a little so no one actually gets drunk drinking Jesus' blood.

I really think it's grasping at straws. I think they desperately try to find anything that will make them LOOK better than a Catholic. I had someone actually tell me that Jesus turned the water into grape juice not wine. Yeah, right, "that juice you made was so much better than the juice we had at the beginning of this party Jesus!" and you can not tell them anything different. It's like talking to a rock.

Every person knows their limitations (or should) for me, i don't have a problem with drinking wine or other alcohol, as long as I dont indulge to the point of drunkenness, since the bible says not to drink to that point. I know people who arent christian at all and hate alcohol of all kinds, so i guess generalizing about any given 'group' of people is a little lame?

Christians shouldn't drink wine or the different alcohol. many human beings have faith that Jesus drank wine or maybe made it, yet that's no longer authentic! They fail to appreciate wine in biblical words. enable us to no longer forget approximately what replaced into written in Proverbs 20:a million Wine [is] a mocker, good drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby isn't sensible. The wine which Christ presented for the dinner occasion, and that which He gave to the disciples as an emblem of His very own blood, replaced into the organic juice of the grape. To this the prophet Isaiah refers whilst he speaks of the hot wine "in the cluster," and says, "wreck it no longer; for a blessing is in it." Isa. sixty 5:8 "Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the 1st end results of all thine boost: so shall thy barns be crammed with a lot, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine." Proverbs 3:9, 10. The wine which Jesus made replaced into no longer fermented liquor. Such wine is a clarification for drunkenness and many great evils, and God had forbidden its use. He says, "Wine id514de3a967d3e2b4ed59658b6e8cd7as raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby isn't sensible." "It biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder." Proverbs 20:a million; 23:32. Please don't be deceived!

Probably because they try to strictly follow the Lord. I am a born again Christian but not a fundamentalist, but I used to be hung up on the law when I was first saved. Some people are not at the same level of growth as others.

The taste for wine drinking comes from education and knowledge.
Also tradition and curiosity.
Fundies are not interested in all these things.

I guess I still don't understand what a "fundy" is! And I am a very devout Christian, a pastor, and I occasionally have some alcohol. Maybe I am a mutant Christian!
