There are lots of reasons why you are unable to shake off a cold for so long. Your immune system is not as efficient as other people's. You may also have chest infection of which you may ordinarily be unaware and simply have put up with it without realising it's significance. A thorough check by your doctor, including a chest x-ray will reassure you that all is well.
Everyone is different in terms of their health and ability to fight illness. During my life I have hardly ever been ill except when I was a child and had the usual childhood illnesses of the day, mumps, measles, chicken-pox etc. I got tonsillitis when I was 21 but thanks to penicillin I got over it. So you see, had I been born say 100 years earlier, I might not even have survived childhood.
Until my 60th birthday, my winter colds used to last for a month or more. However, since being entitled to a free flu jab on the NHS here in UK, I have not had even a sniff of a cold in the last five years. I've also had an anti-pneumonia jab which seems to have improved my ability not to get ill even more. You get that free on the NHS as age 65.
Anyway, from here on in it's downhill all the way. Sort of skiing out of control, if you see what I mean.
Oh well, cream cakes and beer for breakfast again.
[It's what us pensioners do - why fight it?]

You need to have a look at your general health. Stop smoking, achieve and maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, eat healthily, and easiest of all, consider taking a daily multi-vitamin for at least 3 months. It sounds like you have a weak immune system, and all of these things will support it, and prevent you getting so many colds in the first place.

If you smoke , stop now , smoking makes it harder to shake a bug . Look at your diet, eating garlic in your diet can help you shake a bug . Do you eat a lot of suger , suger supresses you immune system. Most importantly wash your hand more often, believe it or not , since my children started carrying waterless hand soap and clorox wipes to wipe thier desk at school , they have cut the amount of sickness 95 percent over previous years .

Are you smoking? If you get a cold and subsequent cough, it could take longer to get over if you're smoking. Also, you may have bronchitis. Are you coughing up yellowish mucous? It could be also you have an upper respiratory infection. In that case, you would need some antibiotics to clear it up. Also, if you are asthmatic coughs usually take longer to go away than if you didn't have it. If you're having trouble breathing and your mucous gets either yellow or rusty in color, please see a Doctor. Hope this helps.
