Certainly... though most actual photography is done by enlisted personnell. Though there is a subdivision of Line-officers... Public Affairs.

Since I left in 1999, I've heard that the PH (Photographers Mate), JO (Journalist), and other ratings have been rearranged.

Always the best thing to do is consult with a recruiter

I've spent a lot of time researching navy officer jobs and you can get in with a degree in photography but you are limited in the jobs you can do unless you had some very technical classes during college. Surface Warfare and Submarine want you to have a lot of Calculus based physics regardless of degree, but you have a great shot at Pilot if you meet the physical standards and pass the test. Intel is highly desired and normally they want Liberal Arts Majors like History and Poli Sci, but that is not necessary. Go to the Navy website and put in a request for info on the officer page. You will get an officer recruiter who will contact you or you can contact him. They will be able to give you an idea of what you are qualified for and what your chances are for certain jobs. Right now the Navy is not "hurting" for recruits or officers so your chances are not as good as they would normally be. Right now, the focus is on Army and Marines. Never the less, get the info and go from there. Good luck and I know many people who had to apply several time before getting picked up, but they did get picked up eventually.

P.S. Got to the Air Warriors website and sign up. It is the Navy OCS blog that allows you to chat and learn all about the qualifications and previous experiences of navy officer candidates who got selected. Very informative.

When I was in the Navy in the 1970s they were interested in people who had college degrees for officer training. It didn't matter what the degree was in, just that they had one. I do not believe that this has changed. You can find out more specifcs from any Navy recruiter. The Navy definitely needs and uses photographers, you could wind up doing anything from Military Intelligence to Public Relations.

you would have to bring to the table a LOT of other stellar qualities such as Leadership roles and other facets such as volunteerism and Sports.

Quite frankly, the Navy needs High Tech degrees like Engineering and Computer Science. a Non Tech degree holder must stand out head and shoudlers above everybody else in order to have a decent shot at Comissioning.

You bet! Talk to your local recruiter and make it perfectly clear that you DO have a degree. Welcome to the line community!
