i would have enough saved to buy a car and caravan (nothing fancy - that will save you on accomodation costs and you can sell them both when you are ready to leave) check out this website for prices on cars:
http://carsales.com.au/
DEFINATLY - get RACV cover whilst you are travelling - I would recommend the top cover (total care - roughly about $200 per year) it will cover you for accomodation if your car breaks down while travelling, plus you can use the show and save card to save money getting into tourist attractions whilst in australia -website:
http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/Internet/Primary/roadside+assistance/car/total+care/total+care?id=e57fe40b3fde7d2&CACHE=NONE&CONTENTCACHE=NONE&CONNECTORCACHE=NONE&SRV=Page
Back up funds: if you are going to work for half the trip, ontop of saving for a caravan and car i would save maybe $10,000
Enjoy Australia - it is a beautiful country
P.S. Depending on how many of you are travelling you may be able to meet up with other people travelling australia in hostels and stuff and travel with them to save money.

I have traveled in Australia with my wife on numerous occassions. We do not go first class, but generally are not cheap, either. Our budget for each trip has been built around a rental car, motels or hotels half the time (rest of time, stay with family or friends) fees for parks, etc, and three meals a day, with at least two a week at 4 star or 5 star resteraunts. We budget 200 US$ a day, and do quite well. I have been told that living in a major city is more expensive, and my experience would bear that out. Pub stays can be inexpensive, backpackers hostels are even better bargains. Based on my experiences in Australia, and assuming you are going to work half time, you should have at least 20,000 USD in the bank. If you do not use a rental car, you will not need all of that. Plan the trip well in advance. Enjoy!

If you can work for most of the time you can save a fair bit of money, i would have a daily allowance, for accomodation and food, which would be about $50 a day. If you allow for about $4000 in a credit card or saving card that you can keep with you whilt travelling you should be fine. So jobs offer accomodation with it and if your lucky food deals. Check the areas you wish to travel, find out what work is available and prices of things there. Cause if all else fails mum or dad can wire money over.

Suggest you buy a trailer and sell it when you leave.
Visit Cairns, you will love it there. Australians on the
whole are pretty nice folks.
