I have had a UTI for 4 days. I went to the doctor 3 days ago and he prescibed me with the generic form of Bactrim. Yesterday was my last day of taking the medication and although I feel better than I did 4 days ago, I can tell it is still there. I drink TONS of water also. How long do antibiotics take? Shouldn't I feel better by now?

You should start to feel some relief. You may need a different antibiotic to treat your UTI. Not all antibiotics work for everyone. Call you doc and ask if the symptoms you are experiencing are normal after treatment with Bactrim. Better to be safe than sorry.

After antibiotic therapy, you should start feeling better in 3 or 4 days. But that doesn't mean it's cleared up. That's why it's so important to finish the complete course of antibiotics (usually 7 to 10 days, depending on the type of infection.) You went to the Doctor 3 days ago and yesterday was the last day you finished?
That seems like a really short course of antibiotics. It may not have cleared it up. I'd call his or her nurse and explain that you're done taking the pills but still have the symptoms and ask if you could repeat the course. That should do it. Also, if you're really uncomfortable, ask if he/she can prescribe you some pyridium, which is an anesthetic for UTI's. It will help with any burning. As far as water, that's good. But for this, cranberry juice would be better. I would drink 3 or 4 glasses a day if you can to help clear the infection (but still call the Doctor and discuss the meds with
the nurse). Good luck.

With the dosing for UTIs there is one day, three day, and seven day courses of Bactrim used. Even though the number of days you take them is different they take the same amount of time to work. Just because you are not taking the medication any more doesn't mean it still isn't having an effect. It just normally improves compliance if you take the medication in a shorter time period. If it doesn't get better in a couple of days give your doctor a call and he will probably prescribe a different antibiotic.

Drink cranberry juice in addition to lots of water. In studies it has been shown to have a positive effect on the symptoms.

You probably need to be on the Bactrim just a bit longer, ask the doctor for a refill and complete a whole week course.

If you still have symptoms you may need another urinanalysis. The bacteria you had may not be covered by bactrim.

Have you been drinking cranberry juice? It helps acidify the urine and acts as a preventative for bacterial growth.

You need to be consuming large amounts of cranberry juice Constantly . This helps kill the bacteria causing the infection. you can also purchase Cranberry concentrate in capsules at health food stores. if you feel you still have the infection you need to get another round of antibiotics. Have your doctor take another culture and see if the bacteria level is down. Sometimes you have to switch medicines. Talk with your doctor and start drinking cranberry juice.
